'The Americans' Premiere Draws 4.7 Million Total Viewers

FX’s critically acclaimed new drama series The Americans got off to a strong start Wednesday night, drawing a combined 4.7 million Total Viewers and 2.54 million Adults 18-49 for its first-run episode and encore telecasts.

The series premiere telecast, which ran from 10:00-11:38 PM, delivered 3.22 million Total Viewers and 1.57 million Adults 18-49, which outperformed the premiere of American Horror Story in Total Viewers (3.18 million), and Sons Of Anarchy in Adults 18-49 (1.55 million). The first encore telecast of The Americans at 11:38 PM delivered 1.01 million Total Viewers and 643,000 Adults 18-49, and the final encore at 1:14 AM posted 470,000 Total Viewers and 319,000 Adults 18-49. The Americans topped all broadcast networks in the 10 PM time period in delivery of Men 18-34 (407,000).

Cable Ratings: Showtime's Sunday Trio Hit Highs, Girls Steady

Showtime’s assorted bad boys and girls were in good company on Sunday night, as Shameless, House of Lies and Californication all hit all-time highs with their season premieres.

Meanwhile on HBO, Girls was steady in its return and Enlightened saw a boost in its new time slot.

Shameless opened Season 3 with 2 million total viewers tuned into its 9 pm airing, up 26 percent from the show’s Season 2 premiere and up 37 percent from its sophomore finale. Across multiple airings, Shameless amassed 2.6 million total viewers.
The House of Lies Season 2 premiere drew 1.2 million total viewers, up 15 and 53 percent from its freshman opener and finale, respectively. For the night, HoL amassed 1.54 mil.

Californication closed out Showtime’s night with an initial audience of 1.1 mil, up some 40 percent from both its Season 5 premiere and finale. Encore airings added another 200K.

HBO’s Girls returned to a 9 pm audience of 866,000 total viewers, on par with the Season 1 premiere’s 872K. Across three airings, the comedy totaled 1.6 mil, up 42 percent from the freshman opener’s two airings.
Enlightened led out of that with an initial audience of 610,000, up 43 percent from its Season 1 premiere (which aired on a Monday).
 
Lastly, the series debut of Cinemax’s Banshee on Friday night drew 483,000 total viewers, the channel’s best numbers for an original series telecast since the Strike Back series launch in August 2011. For the night, Banshee amassed 1 million across three airings.

The Voice Finale brings in huge ratings

The Voice‘s Season 3 finale played to 14 million total viewers while scoring a 4.9 demo rating, hitting season highs and up 18 and 11 percent from the NBC competition’s second coronation ceremony.

Over on CBS, NCIS (19.4 mil/3.3) rose 18 percent from last week’s seven-and-a-half-year demo low, while NCIS: Los Angeles (15.4 mil/2.9) was up 12 percent. Vegas (9.8 mil/1.6) managed to tick up a tenth opposite the final hour of The Voice (which was doing 14 mil/5.0).


ABC’s Happy Endings (3.2 mil/1.3) and Apartment 23 (2.6 mil/1.1) both inched up a tenth, while Private Practice‘s Charlotte episode (3.8 mil/1.2) held steady versus The Voice.

DVR ratings: ‘Hart of Dixie,’ ‘Grimm’ season 2, ‘Nikita,’ ‘Nashville’ win

Before diving too deep into our analysis of the latest notable DVR ratings, a refresher: these are live+7 numbers that include a full week of time for viewers to watch their favorite shows, and they are not nearly as significant as live viewers when it comes to whether or not a show is renewed or canceled. Our personal litmus test is that any show that gains more than 45% of its 18-49 audience by DVR viewing is one worth looking at, since otherwise it is more or less a moot point.

This week (which we are actually looking at data for the week of October 15), a number of bubble shows in the first and second seasons benefited greatly from these figures … though all of them are probably still safe from being in danger later on. (All figures via TVbythenumbers.)

“Grimm” (up 87% to a 2.8 rating) – “Grimm” is a DVR beast like no other, and it has to be all but guaranteed at the moment that this show is really going nowhere. Next to “Shark Tank,” it’s the best thing Friday night has going for it.

“Nikita” (up 67% to a 0.5) – 67% of a low number is still a really low number, and that is what we are looking at here with this show. Since a third-season renewal adds to the likelihood of a fourth thanks to syndication, our guess here is that “Nikita” will probably receive more episodes, but have to finish its run in the summer months with a reduced budget.

“Nashville” (up 65% to a 3.3) – A 2.0 rating (which the drama had for this week) was not enough to guarantee safety, but good reviews coupled with strong DVR figures may be just enough to give Connie Britton and company at least a full season.

“Chicago Fire” (up 60% to a 2.4) – This decision will probably be made at the eleventh hour. The good news is that the numbers aren’t dropping for this show; the bad news is that it is the lowest-rated drama series the network has at the moment.

“Revolution” (up 57% to a 5.2) – There’s really no point here of including this show. “Revolution” has a full season, and if it returns to these numbers in the spring, season 2 is all but guaranteed.

“Elementary” (up 52% to a 3.5) – Sherlock Holmes has not delivered numbers that will stun anyone into silence, but this is the only new CBS show in the top 25 here … and it and “CSI” are the only CBS shows in the top 20, period.

“Hart of Dixie” (up 50% to a 0.9) – The “Hart of Dixie” ratings are not stellar, but it’s all about perspective. This far, season 2 has averaged better numbers than “Gossip Girl” (in its final season), “90210,” “Nikita,” and “Emily Owens, M.D.” This should get it a season 3 almost by default.

“Scandal” (up 47% to a 2.8) – Like “Nashville,” this well-reviewed show will remain on the bubble despite these strong ratings. Luckily, at least it already has a full season.

“Last Resort” (up 47% to a 2.5) – So why is “Scandal” on the bubble and “Last Resort” in danger despite the small ratings differential? It all comes down to timeslot, and the fact that ABC likes being in business with Shonda Rhimes.

CBS was the number one network in adults 18-49 and with total viewers.

On CBS, NCIS earned a 3.6 adults 18-49 rating, down 12% from last week's 4.1. NCIS: Los Angeles scored a 3.1 adults 18-49 rating, down 9% from last week's 3.4. Vegas garnered a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating down 16% from last week's 2.5.

On FOX, the season premiere of Raising Hope scored a 1.7 adults 18-49 rating, down 45% from a 3.1 for last season's premiere on Tuesday, September 20 at 9:30PM, which it followed the highly rated season premiere of New Girl. The second episode of Ben And Kate earned a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating, down 24% from last week's 2.1. New Girl garnered a 2.8 adults 18-49 rating, even with last week's premiere. The Mindy Project notched a 1.9 among adults 18-49, down 21% from last week's 2.4.

On NBC, The Voice best of the auditions clip show earned a 2.9 adults 18-49 rating, down 31% from last week's 4.2. Go On scored a 2.2 18-49 rating, down 19% from last week's 2.7. The New Normal garnered a 1.7 among adults 18-49 down from 15% last week's 2.0. among adults 18-49. Parenthood notched a 1.7 adults 18-49 rating down 6% from last week's 1.8.

On ABC, Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars, garnered a 2.1 adults 18-49, even with last week. Private Practice earned a 1.6 adults 18-49 rating, down 16% from last week's 1.9.

On the CW, the season premiere of Hart Of Dixie scored a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating down from a 0.8 for its series premiere on September 26, 2011 at 9PM but up from a a 0.6 for its season finale on May 15, 2012.The Next earned a 0.3 adults 18-49 rating, matching its last original episode on Thursday ,September 27.
