Selena Gomez on Life After Justin Bieber Split: "It's Been Weird and Sad and Cool"

Selena Gomez has been putting on a happy face in the wake of her recent breakup from on-again/off-again boyfriend Justin Bieber, but if her performance in New York this weekend is any indication, there's more to the situation than meets the eye. Taking the stage for a private concert benefiting UNICEF on Jan. 19, the 20-year-old singer made several cryptic references to moving on from an old relationship.

"I've been through a lot the past few months. It's been weird and sad and cool," she told the crowd before introducing an acoustic cover of Justin Timberlake's scorned lover's anthem "Cry Me a River." "This song definitely speaks to me."

Gomez didn't specifically mention Bieber, but a source at the event tells Us Weekly she "seemed so angry" during the song. (Incidentally, her ex performed the same tune in concert a few months ago.)

Prior to the show, however, the newly single Wizards of Waverly Place actress was all smiles as she spoke to reporters on the red carpet. And she seemed to light up when asked about her friendship with fellow starlet Taylor Swift. 

"Taylor is one of the most inspirational, positive, good-hearted people I know," she gushed of her BFF, who recently went through a breakup of her own, with One Direction boy-bander Harry Styles. "I met her when she was 18...it was absolutely incredible to see someone so successful and so humble. I think she's been a big part of me staying who I am, too."

Gomez also discussed her risque role in the upcoming movie Spring Breakers, in which she plays one of four bikini-clad co-eds who rob a restaurant to pay for their spring break trip. "It's kind of been refreshing and nice for me to step out of my comfort zone and do things that I didn't think I could do as an actress," she said, noting that she had tried to warn her younger fans about the film. 

The singer revealed that she was taking more risks offscreen, as well, particularly with her music. "I'm a little bit more mouthy [now]," she said of her new album. "I'm a little bit older. I've got a little more sass. [I'm] telling a lot more, too."

"Everything happens for a reason," she added mysteriously, "so enjoy every moment.

Justin Bieber is well on his way to becoming a free agent once again now that his relationship with Selena Gomez seems to be on the rocks, so it's no wonder he's being hunted by single ladies.

But Jenny McCarthy really wasn't shy in showing the teen heartthrob how she feels about him.

As she handed him a gong during the American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night, the 40-year-old Playboy model took the opportunity to nuzzle the singer's neck and seeing if he smells just as good as his range of perfumes suggest.

Not at all bothered by the age difference, the blonde bombshell jumped on the 18-year-old and kissed his neck while the young singer pretended to be shocked.

After being kissed three or four times by the notorious man eater, Justin told the audience jokingly: 'I feel violated right now.'

Justin Bieber brought his mother to Sunday night’s American Music Awards, but it was his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez whom he spent the rest of the night with, according to, of all people, actress Jenny McCarthy.

“My cub @justinbeiber [sic] brought his acceptable and beautifully aged beauty Selena to the AMA after party,” McCarthy, 40, after the show. “Guess I’m back on the prowl. Rww!”

Sources for E! News added that Bieber, 18, and Gomez, 20, left the Nokia theater hand-in-hand after the show ended.

The uber-famous couple, whose split was reported only a few weeks ago, have been spending a lot of time together following their split.

To add more fuel to the fire, on Nov. 15, One Direction were guests on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where Niall told Ellen DeGeneres exactly what he looks for in a girl. ”I like someone that’s cute, someone I can have a laugh with, and I also like people that are American.” Selena certainly fits the bill!

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have gone their separate ways.

They broke up about a week ago, a source exclusively tells E! News.

"Because of their crazy schedules, it was getting harder and harder to maintain a relationship," the source says.

Rumors that the adorable twosome had split started gaining traction in the last couple of weeks, but hit a high note just last night when Bieber, 18, was spotted with Victoria's Secret model Barbara Palvin, 19, seeing The Lion King on Broadway.

Gomez, 20, and the Biebs went public with their romance in February 2011 when they attended the Vanity Fair Oscar party together.

"I am happy," she told us a few months later about their romance. "I'm really happy."

No surprise, but many rabid Bieber fans have had it in for Gomez since day one, frequently attacking her via the Internet.

"It hurts, it really does," she once told Z100 radio in NYC. "I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong. I've been best friends with him for a very long time. It does hurt my feelings a lot, but I try not to focus on it."



Maybe in 20 years they will meet again..

“[Nods] Uh-huh! I definitely didn’t appreciate it when I was little. I was frustrated that my parents weren’t together, and never saw the light at the end of the tunnel where my mom was working hard to provide a better life for me. I’m terrified of what I would have become if I’d stayed there. I’m sure I’d have two children by now. But I love the people, and I’m glad I grew up there. It’s because of [my mom] that I can do things on my own. I like being professional. I like showing up on time. I like being good to people, and I know that I’m reflecting her at the end of the day.”

On her most eye-opening moments as UNICEF’s youngest-ever U.S. ambassador…
“When I went to Ghana with my mom and my stepdad for UNICEF. That entire trip was life changing. There were kids playing with plastic bottles—they got a bunch of rubber bands and put the bottles together and made a soccer ball—and that was their entertainment; they were so happy! If you think how we live our lives here, we need so much to keep us entertained, and we expect so much. And these kids want an education so badly. I mean, I hated homework, and they want it; it’s amazing. I also participated in the Global Poverty Project’s Live Below the Line campaign, where I lived on $1.50 a day for a week—such a cool experience.”

On if she feels like she is talking to two engaged fan bases at once (her own and boyfriend Justin Bieber’s)…
“Yeah, and I adore his fans. I would never, ever want to disrespect them. You know, I get it: I was obsessed with Jesse McCartney growing up! He was my world. My high school crush. So I respect it, and if anything, I admire it.”

On if her 15-year-old self would be surprised at what her life looks like now…
“Yeah, because I was so scared and so shy back then. I mean, I grew up in one of the biggest high schools in the world, and that’s the Disney Channel. Everybody was falling in love with each other or not liking each other, and it was exhausting…and I was the shy one in the corner. And now I’m so opinionated, and I don’t have time for the cattiness. I have good people around me, and I’m glad I’m at the place I’m in. I wish I was there back then.”

On not letting negativity affect her…
“If I had let all of the negative stuff affect me, I don’t think I would be satisfied with the person I am now. That’s what I tell my fans: If you’re miserable with everything going on in school, that is so not going to matter the moment you leave. My mom always told me, “Just turn the other cheek and keep moving forward.” That’s something I’ve always done, and now I look back and I have no regrets.”

On if she ever has time to see best friend Taylor Swift and boyfriend Justin Bieber and if they text constantly to stay in touch…
“Basically! I actually did talk to Taylor last week, and we were like, “I don’t even remember the last time I saw you,” which is really unfortunate. But if it gets too dire, I fly to Taylor or I fly home or I fly to Justin.”

Tonight was one of the most amazing nights I’ve ever had. Our film got a standing ovation at the Venice film festival! I couldn’t stop crying.
