Steven Spielberg Developing Stanley Kubrick's Dream Project 'Napoleon' As TV Miniseries

via glooce

Even though he put "Robopocalypse" on hold to figure out the script, 2013 is still shaping up to be a very busy and exciting year for Steven Spielberg. He was recently named as the jury president for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, he's producing "Jurassic Park IV," which stomps back into theaters next year, he's working with Tom Hanks on another "Band Of Brothers"-esque series for HBO, and now he's making an unrealized dream project from one of the greatest filmmakers of all time come back to life.

"I've been developing Stanley Kubrick's screenplay -- for a miniseries not for a motion picture -- about the life of Napoleon. Kubrick wrote the script in 1961, a long time ago," Spielberg told French network Canal+. That's really about it. There are no details on if he'll direct or how far along into development it is, but Spielberg is working with Kubrick's estate on the project.

As devotees of Kubrick know, this is probably the grandaddy of all of the helmer's unrealized projects. "Napoleon" was massively researched, with literally tens of thousands of location photos, slides of imagery and endless notes and details about the historic leader that filled up boxes upon boxes upon boxes in Kubrick's archives (so much in fact, that it formed the foundation of a rather amazing book on the subject). But the movie was never to be. MGM and United Artists both balked at producing the movie, which would have required thousands of extras and more, saying it was too risky in the wake of expensive endeavors like 1968's "War And Peace" and 1970's "Waterloo" that struggled to make their money back. Kubrick would eventually tackle "Barry Lyndon," which takes place 15 years before the Napoleonic wars, but he still longed to make the movie. He even drafted screenplays, with the 1969 version available right here.

And of course, this isn't the first time Spielberg has taken a Kubrick project across the finish line. 2001's "A.I." first started as a Kubrick project as far back as the 1970s, and he developed it slowly right up to the early '90s, when he then presented it to Spielberg, thinking his sensibilities would be better suited for it. Spielberg declined, but decided to tackle it after the filmmaker's passing.

But back to "Napoleon," this is pretty massive and exciting news, and while we can forever wonder what Kubrick might have done, there is no doubt that given piles upon piles of research material, Spielberg and his team will have a pretty good idea of what he was aiming for. Hopefully, there will be more news to come soon. Watch below -- Spielberg talks about "Napoleon" at the 9:14 mark. [Cinema Teaser]

Steven Spielberg To Lead Jury At Cannes

via glooce

Steven Spielberg is to head up the jury at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for the first time this year.

The director will help decide which film wins the event's top prize, the coveted Palme d'Or.

He said the role was an "honour and a privilege" and also spoke of his own affection for the festival, which takes place in the glamorous French resort from May 15 - 26.

"The memory of my first Cannes Film Festival, nearly 31 years ago with the debut of E.T, is still one of the most vibrant memories of my career," said the 66-year-old.

"For over six decades, Cannes has served as a platform for extraordinary films to be discovered and introduced to the world for the first time."

Festival president Gilles Jacob said he had been trying for some time to get Spielberg to lead the judging panel.

"I've often asked Steven to be jury president," he told the festival's website.

"But he's always been shooting a film. So when this year I was told 'E.T., phone home', I understood and immediately replied: 'At last!'"

Spielberg has directed some of the best-loved movies in Hollywood history such as Jaws, Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Jurassic Park.

He has also won best director Oscars for Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.

However, there was disappointment for the film-maker at last week's ceremony when he was beaten to the award for a third time after being nominated for Lincoln.

Last year's Cannes jury was headed by Italian director and producer Nanni Moretti, and included the likes of actor Ewan McGregor and fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier.

The Palme d'Or was won by Michael Haneke's Amour, a stark film about love and death.

6 Ways J.J. Abrams Can Crossover ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Star Trek’

via glooce

Fanboys across the internet are suffering myocardial nerdfarctions at the news that J.J. Abrams is going to direct ‘Star Wars: Episode 7.’

After initial flashes of what that deal process must have been like (we’re fairly certain Abrams merely stomps around Hollywood shouting “Mine! Mine!”) we couldn’t help but wonder what this meant for the ‘Star Trek‘ franchise. With Abrams as the creative force behind both universes, might we finally get to see some ‘Wars’/'Trek’ crossover outside of the realm of fanfiction? If Mr. Abrams is up for some suggestions, here’s what we’ve got for him.

Ewoks Eat Roasted Tribbles Around a Campfire

Those reproductive nuisances never really served a purpose -- I don't care what Cyrano Jones says. Their origins have always been mysterious, and their appearance on the Forest Moon of Endor makes just as much sense as anything. Can modern audiences handle this much fuzzy cuteness? Ask your neighborhood Brony.

Leonard Nimoy As One Of Those Blue Ghosts

A Jedi can never die -- we learned that from the first time we heard Obi Wan shout, "Run, Luke, run!" As such, in 'Star Wars: Episode 7' it might be cool if our young man on a hero's journey should learn about the Force from one of the ancient, original Jedi from 'Star Wars' canon. We'd like to see Anavas Svag in the form of a glowing, elderly, mumbling Leonard Nimoy. Maybe he'll do some sort of hand salute and all the fans can pass out.

Horta Are Actually Exogorth Excrement

The big worms that live inside of the asteroids around Hoth? Turns out that they have a really unique digestive system. (I mean, my God, the Millennium Falcon can fly around in there and these beasts don't mind?) Their solid waste is actually silicon based, and these pieces of matter are actually the sentient beings known as the Horta. Man, talk about a life of "Pain!!!!"

R2-D2 Falls in Love With Nomad

Imagine the fun Ben Burtt clucks and whistles R2-D2 will make when his boyfriend zaps Uhura of all her memory (which she manages to get back the next week). Oh yeah, you didn't know R2-D2 was gay? He doesn't like to advertise it, but he's totally out to friends.

Golden Globes Backstage 2013: Quentin Tarantino Drops the N-Word

via glooce

Quentin Tarantino was nothing if not Quentin Tarantino.

Less than a minute into his press conference backstage at the 70th Annual Golden Globes, the Django Unchained winner dropped the N-word. The usually bustling press room fell silent for a second; a reporter could be heard letting out a whistle, as in, "Oh, boy."

The filmmaker's choice language came as he fieldied a question about his controversial, slavery-era spaghetti Western. Tarantino was not apologizing.

Critics who think the N-word should not have been spoken by his 19th century characters, the mile-a-minute Tarantino argued, are "saying I should massage. They're saying I should whitewash. They're saying I should lie."

Don Cheadle, a winner for House of Lies, who took the stage right after Tarantino, couldn't resist picking up the thread.

"Please no [N-word] questions," Cheadle told reporters. "Black people questions are all right."

For the record, Cheadle said he hadn't seen Django, but was looking forward to checking it out.
