One Direction and the rise of Gay Acting Straight Men

via glooce

An inside look at One Direction, Homo-eroticism, and Testicle Slapping.

If ever there was a pop group perfectly engineered to fuel the fantasy lives of adolescent girls (and a subset of grown woman and gay men), it’s One Direction. The Simon Cowell-managed and -manufactured fivesome are equal in looks and charm (if not necessarily in talent) and sing about parties, kissing, and girls who don’t know they’re beautiful, in songs tailor-made for the Twilight generation.

But One Direction differ from the all-male singing groups that came before them in other, less superficial, ways as well. Take the video for their latest ditty, Kiss You, in which Harry Styles, riding on a motorcycle behind Zayn Malik, reaches forward to cheekily tweak his band mate’s nipples.

Or their previous hit, Live While We're Young, in which the boys wrestle, hug, and play with giant inflatable banana. Not to mention the countless TV appearances, interviews and live concerts in which the band have groped or mock-kissed each other for the cameras.

It wasn’t like this when I was growing up. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the talent was just as uneven and the songs equally corny, but even within the boy band genre, the “cute one” was a one-man role (alongside the “bad boy,” “shy one,” and the “one with the talent”), rather than a prerequisite for appearing on stage at all.

Yep, there’s a definite whiff of the homoerotic about 2013’s foremost boy band.

Groups of young men who sing, dance and wear brightly coloured jeans (or back in the 1990s, plastic trousers and tight t-shirts) have long been objects of sexual mockery. ‘N Sync, the American boy band famous for launching Justin Timberlake, was the butt of homophobic jokes long before Lance Bass came out of the closet in 2006. The Backstreet Boys? “More like the Backdoor Boys,” the turn of the millennium joke tittered.

One Direction are no different. No sooner had the band’s Kiss You video hit YouTube than a parody emerged with jokes about “gay leprechauns,” “dropping the soap,” and liking men’s butts. Hilarious, no?

But what distinguishes One Direction from their predecessors is that rather than trying to fight these stereotypes by gushing about women and being careful not to stand too closely together, they play up to them. They flirt. They roughhouse. They touch each other’s bottoms at concerts, and perform at gay nightclubs. They also have girlfriends. People may call them gay, but (most of the time, at least) they don’t give a toss. Because for the One Direction generation, being “gay” isn’t a bad thing.

In fact, amongst the demographic Harry, Liam, Louis, Zayn and Niall occupy, this kind of behaviour is common, says UK masculinities researcher, Eric Anderson. Anderson is the author of a 2010 study which found that 89 percent of 18- to 25-year-old self-identified heterosexual men had kissed another man on the lips - and in most cases, there was nothing sexual about it. “This is what young men of that age do in the UK,” Anderson says. “Touching, hugging, cuddling, and bum/testicle slapping are all ways you show your mates that you love them.”

It’s a shift that is deeply tied to a broader decline in – and increasing unacceptability of – homophobia, Anderson believes. In periods of high "homohysteria" he argues – places and points in history in which same-sex attraction is both widely recognised and reviled – men will keep their distance from each other in order to avoid being labelled as “gay.” At when homohysteria is lower, men are able to be more freely intimate: whether that means One Direction-style horseplay, friends holding hands in the Middle East, or rugby players posing with their arms draped around each other instead of standing with their arms solemnly folded.

Australian sociologist Michael Flood has observed a similar blurring of boundaries between straight and gay cultures, pointing to the rise of the metrosexual, the hipster, and indeed of men like himself: for whom going to Mardi Gras or hanging out with same-sex attracted friends is second nature, but who go home to female lovers and partners. He calls them “straight queers.”

But this blurring has been “very uneven,” Flood warns. “It’s much more common amongst urban young men than rural young men. It probably goes along with particular peer cultures as well. You’ll find fewer straight queers in death metal or pub rock than in hipster cultures, cafes and so on.” And whilethe prevalence of homophobia is lowest in the 18 to 24 age group, it is significantly higher amongst 14- to 17-year-olds. Not to mention that One Direction are playing with gay culture in a safely heterosexual space. “Coming out would be different,” Flood maintains.

Then again, it seems that in this case, coming out isn’t really the point. One Direction’s mock kisses and crotch grabbing may garner attention on YouTube, but they represent the flirtatious tip of a decidedly more platonic iceberg. Beneath them lie a myriad of more subtle intimacies, and a gradual shift to a culture that allows men to banter, make body contact, and even love each other a little bit, without it marking a threat to their status as men. In other words, a culture that allows young men to enjoy the kind of friendship and intimacy that has traditionally been associated with young women.

As for One Direction themselves? When asked by an American interviewer why they grab each other’s butts and crotches on stage, Niall replied, “See, that one, that one’s just to make the girls scream, isn’t it?” “See, [Harry’s] done that, and the crowd’s going crazy,” chimed in Zayn.

“We do it for a laugh,” they concluded.

Frank Ocean Shoots A Video for 'Forest Gump'

via glooce

Before his alleged brawl with Yellow Cake, Frank Ocean was out in the desert shooting a video for his controversial ode to trade, “Forrest Gump.”

The Grammy-nominated singer was strapped in a yellow suit and surrounded by skaters, bikers and cheerleaders for the upcoming visual. Somehow a trampoline was also mixed in there for good measure. Looks like a gay ol’ time. More pics under the cut.

Justin Bieber cheated on Selena Gomez with a Black girl, is he pulling a Michael Fassbender?

via glooce

Justin Bieber‘s debauchery-filled evening in Los Angeles — in which, in a stoned haze, he engaged in sexual activity with a 22-year-old nursing student — was the last straw in his 2-year relationship with Selena Gomez, sources tell the new issue of Star.

On December 21, an insider tells the magazine, the 18-year-old pop star joined rapper Lil Twist and nursing student Milyn “Mimi” Jenson around 6 p.m at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons.

“They all went to buy weed at a smoke shop on Olympic Blvd. in Hollywood,” the insider said, “then they got food at McDonald’s and went back to the hotel.”

At the hotel, the group smoked marijuana and drank a chemical concoction known as “sizzurp” throughout the night. From there, they went to the Baby singer’s $6.6 million Calabasas mansion, where Justin opened up about his fondness for tattoos and Xanax, as well as his plans to build a hookah room in the house.

Matt Bellamy of Muse Blasts Society 'Structures'

    via glooce

Matt Bellamy has blasted the ''structures'' keeping people ''in place'' within society.
Muse think young people are ''born into bondage''
The conspiracy theory-loving rockers feel younger generations are oppressed by subtle means, and hope their music finds its way to an audience who willing to question society's norms.
Frontman Matt Bellamy said: ''The structures keeping people in place these days are days are far more covert and coercive: Advertising, the media, the way corporations and governments function and so on.
''A lot of young people are born into bondage and don't necessarily know it. I'd like to think our songs have some influence on people who feel they don't want to fall in with everything.''
The 'Uprising' rocker feels his group are keeping up a ''tradition'' among bands of making young people think and question what's around them.
He added to Classic Rock magazine: ''I do feel we are keeping up that tradition, that it's the job of bands, musicians, artists in general to at least shed light on things people might not be aware of.
''I wouldn't pretend we're the starting point, but in combination with other artists out there, I think we collectively influence other people to come up with new ways of thinking. And they're the ones who will form policies in the future.''

Tom Hardy has only just got back from South Africa, where he's been filming Mad Max: Fury Road… And now the first picture of him in character has leaked online!

A signed photo of Tom as Mad Max was posted to Ain't It Cool News today, showing Tom in Max's signature leathers in a desolate landscape, with what looks like a bandaged hand.

Fury Road stars Tom alongside an amazing cast that includes Charlize Theron, Riley Keough, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Nicholas Hoult and Zoe Kravitz.

When Tom was asked about the movie at the Jack Reacher premiere, he said it would come out "next year, or the next… or the next" but that he was excited for people to see it:

"It was an amazing experience. It’s a big live action, fully articulated stunt piece which picks up where Mel Gibson’s Mad Max left off and takes it to the next level."

Ben Affleck Could Be Considering Senate Run, Say Sources

    via glooce

If Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) becomes the next Secretary of State, what will happen to his U.S. Senate vacancy? Many are predicting that actor-director Ben Affleck could be his replacement.

“Ben has been very active in Democratic Party politics for a long time and has never hid his love of politics,” a friend of Ben’s tells The Huffington Post. “He is a very impressive person, with a great deal of knowledge and passion.”

Ben is in D.C. now, raising awareness about the troubles in the Congo, but he declined to state his intentions when asked by Politico.

“Anyone that underestimates Ben’s political ambition is a fool. He’s very focused and smart. People once laughed when he said he wanted to be a director, and now they are not laughing,” one insider reveals. “Also, never forget that this guy survived Bennifer -- so anything is possible.”

Ben’s spokesperson did not return calls for comment.

Tom Hiddleston wants to be a director

    via glooce

    AA1D0D0563825EE5599294FF2DC6B

Tom Hiddleston has revealed he would like to step behind the camera as a director.

The British actor, best known for playing villain Loki in Thor and Avengers Assemble, is helping to judge the Jameson Empire Done In 60 Seconds short films competition, and admitted he would like to make his own movies in the future.

"I've never actually made one myself, apart from messing about on my phone. I've written stuff that has gone on to be produced, which is definitely for the best for all of us," he said.

"I would love to do it at some point. The trouble is, I've just been so busy with acting that I haven't had the chance to take out the time to produce my own stuff."

Tom insisted he won't be the Simon Cowell of film, and will instead be supportive of budding filmmakers entering the competition.

"No way, absolutely not. I know how hard it is to make films and to be in them so I will be much more compassionate," he said.

"I'm an ambassador for the competition so I hope I can encourage people to pick up a camera and shoot and send in entries so we can get as many films as we can."

He added: "I'll be looking for confidence and style. Every filmmaker has an individual take on the world and what I find most impressive is when somebody has the confidence to put their own stamp on something."

Jimmy Fallon To Replace Jay Leno As 'Tonight Show' Host In 2014?

    via glooce

Somewhere Conan O’Brien is probably smiling. There’s word that NBC brass are ruminating over Jay Leno’s future — which would involve finally giving their current late-late guy comic, Jimmy Fallon, the coveted job as the host of "The Tonight Show."

The latest rumblings about Leno come from various talent agents who admit they have quietly been contacted by NBC officials hoping to find a new late-late host who will eventually take over Fallon’s 12:35 a.m. time slot.

Leno’s current $15 million a year deal expires in 2014, and came about after he “volunteered” to take a 50% pay cut earlier this year, a move that helped NBC slash "The Tonight Show’s" $100 million budget by about 20%.

But my money is on how NBC brass are betting it’s high time they cash in on a generational shift toward younger viewers that has been going on in late-night television for some time.

ABC will be the first to capitalize on the shift next month when their own late-late guy, Jimmy Kimmel, moves his show to 11:35 p.m., switching places with “Nightline” in a bid to boost the network’s percentage of viewers between the ages of 18 and 49 — a group prized by advertisers.

It doesn’t hurt at all that “Jimmy Kimmel Live” is an entertainment program headed by a star 20 years younger than his new time slot rivals, Letterman and Leno.

Meanwhile, at CBS, Leno’s nemesis, David Letterman, is also under contract until 2014, and there has been a long unsaid understanding throughout the TV industry that Leno won’t step down until Dave does.

Of course, as these rumblings may prove, Jay could always be pushed — but he’s proven over the years that he’s harder to kill than Dracula.

Take the September 2009 fiasco when then-NBC chief Jeff Zucker carved out a 10 p.m. time slot for "The Jay Leno Show” because Jay reportedly insisted that he didn’t want to leave the network.

Up until that moment, there had been a long-planned transition in the works for Leno to step down from “Tonight” and pass the torch to O’Brien.

    But Jay didn’t go away.

Instead his prime-time show turned out to be a flop, and worse, it shifted the spotlight away from O’Brien’s debut and cannibalized “Tonight Show" viewers.

By January, Leno was back on "The Tonight Show" and O’Brien was out of a job — although he was paid millions to leave the network — eventually landing another late-night talk show on TBS.

Maybe this time Leno will just quietly go away.

    I’m betting he won’t.

Ewan McGregor talks about being naked on the Big Screen

    via glooce

Ewan McGregor tops just about every list going of actors who don't shy away from flashing the flesh for the odd naked scene. So when The Impossible star sat down (fully clothed, alas) with CBS Sunday Morning this week, it was only a matter of time before the topic of conversation turned to the Scot's renowned penchant for stripping down on camera.

And good news for fans of the erstwhile trou-dropper: The 41-year-old has no plans for cutting back when it comes to showing off his nude form. Clearly, the man takes his craft seriously.

"Being naked is something that happens in either end of the day for me, and if you're lucky, somewhere in the middle as well," he says on the show, airing this weekend. "And I don't understand why it's an issue.

"I don't take my clothes off in movies because I want to flash my body around. I took my clothes off for movies because I'm an actor."

And one who wants to show every, well, intimate aspect of a character. Even those rather exposing sides that other actors may shy away from. (Not Ewan, though, as evidenced by his frequently full-frontal body of work on display in Velvet Goldmine, Young Adam, The Ghost Writer, The Pillow Book, Trainspotting and...we're probably forgetting one or two.)

"I believe the movies that I make say something about the world and therefore they should reflect human instincts and natures and desires," he went on. "A big part of that for us is our sexual life and romantic life."

'Downton Abbey' star Rob James-Collier 'wants US TV role'

    via glooce

"I know Damian Lewis just won an Emmy... so I'm working hard on my own American accent," James-Collier revealed. "I think I'll nail it very soon." [lol he's obviously just being tongue in cheek here, just fyi ONTD]

He added: "There's definitely a wave of Brits doing great work on American television, and I wouldn't mind being one of them! I signed with Billy Lazarus at UTA [United Talent Agency] and hope to be auditioning here when we're not shooting."

Downton star Jessica Brown Findlay recently departed the hit period drama and has since been linked to a leading role in action movie sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Downton Abbey will return to ITV1 this Christmas for a festive special, with a full fourth series to follow in 2013.

It was recently reported that Dan Stevens - Matthew Crawley on the series - would be written out in the series four premiere, though ITV is yet to officially confirm the actor's exit.
