First Look of Tom Hardy as Mad Max

Tom Hardy has only just got back from South Africa, where he's been filming Mad Max: Fury Road… And now the first picture of him in character has leaked online!

A signed photo of Tom as Mad Max was posted to Ain't It Cool News today, showing Tom in Max's signature leathers in a desolate landscape, with what looks like a bandaged hand.

Fury Road stars Tom alongside an amazing cast that includes Charlize Theron, Riley Keough, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Nicholas Hoult and Zoe Kravitz.

When Tom was asked about the movie at the Jack Reacher premiere, he said it would come out "next year, or the next… or the next" but that he was excited for people to see it:

"It was an amazing experience. It’s a big live action, fully articulated stunt piece which picks up where Mel Gibson’s Mad Max left off and takes it to the next level."

Tom Hardy is being eyed for the lead in Animal Rescue

Now this is an interesting looking project. Start with a novel by Dennis Lehane, whose work has inspired ‘Shutter Island,’ ‘Mystic River’ and ‘Gone Baby Gone.’ Put Michael Roskam, the Oscar-nominated director of the incredible ‘Bullhead,’ in the director’s seat. Finally, headline it with Tom Hardy, easily one of the most interesting and talented actors working today. Yep, that’s all you need to get us interested in ‘Animal Rescue.’

The project was originally in the hands of Neil Burger, but he stepped away to pursue other endeavors. The current line-up of talent is not a sure thing yet, but according to Variety, gears are turning. With luck, we could be getting a Roskam-directed, Boston-based crime drama starring Hardy, which sounds incredible. Hardy is a born leading man (and he’s had one helluva year with ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Lawless’) and Roskam’s ‘Bullhead’ is one of the most unique and audacious crime films in recent memory. This is a dream team.

As for the film itself, the story “…follows a lonely Boston bartender who rescues a puppy from a garbage can and becomes the target of the dog’s abusive and mentally unstable former owner, while simultaneously getting caught in the middle of a criminal conspiracy playing out in his mob-controlled bar.”

Of course, things could always change. Both Roskam and Hardy are in high demand, with the former planning to direct ‘The Tiger’ and an HBO pilot called ‘Buda Bridge’ and the latter signed on for a series of other projects, including Doug Liman’s ‘Everest.’ Still, we can only hope this all comes together — everything about this one feels right.

When Hollywood has two similarly themed projects brewing at the same time, it’s often a case of two studios competing to see which one comes out on top. In the case of two upcoming animal poaching movies, however, it’s actually a single studio joining forces with the same starry team for multiple projects centered around a single topic.

Warner Bros. is planning two films about the illegal poaching of endangered creatures in Africa, both of which will be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way, Tobey Maguire‘s Material Pictures, and Tom Hardy‘s Executive Options. One is said to be a star vehicle for Hardy, while the other could star all three.

We got word of the three movie stars getting together for an animal trafficking/poaching film back in August, but Deadline‘s new report indicates that the trio are actually collaborating on two separate movies with overlapping themes. At least for now — it’s not clear yet whether both will actually make it to the big screen.

The first is set to star Hardy, who came up with the concept for the story himself. Sheldon Turner (Up in the Air) is already on board to write the script, which revolves around an ex-special forces soldier (Hardy) teaching rangers how to fight off the rhino and elephant poachers lurking in the Zimbabwean bush. Over the course of the job the soldier comes to love the land and its animals, and begins to fight back against the people trying to destroy them. Dean Baker and Paul Grey will produce alongside Hardy, Maguire, and DiCaprio.

The second movie has no writer or director as of yet. But it may have the beginnings of a really good ensemble cast, as Deadline says the A-list trio “might” appear onscreen. The narrative is envisioned as a sort of Traffic for the animal trafficking industry, exploring the shady business from a multitude of perspectives ranging from corporate execs to poachers to “others involved in the underbelly of a global scourge that occurs not only in the jungles but also the oceans, where illegal shark fishing runs rampant.” This project originated with Maguire and DiCaprio, with Hardy signing on after discovering that his interests matched well with theirs.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Tom Hardy Team for Anti-Poaching Movie at Warner Bros.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Tom Hardy are teaming up to produce an untitled animal-trafficking drama set up at Warner Bros., sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Hardy came up with the idea, inspired by friends who are former Special Forces operatives and went on to become anti-poacher fighters in South Africa and other nations.

The goal, say sources, is to make a movie in the vein of Traffic, Steven Soderbergh’s multistory take on the various impacts of the war on drugs. In this case, the story would look at everything from the ground war on poachers in the African savannah to how animal material ends up in the fashion houses of Paris. It's unclear whether DiCaprio, Maguire or Hardy would act in the movie.

A search for a writer has begun.

DiCaprio and Maguire are lifelong pals but rarely have worked together, though they both are starring in The Great Gatsby for Warners, which is set for release in summer 2013.

DiCaprio also is longtime animal-rights activist. Last year, he became the spokesman for a campaign to protect elephants organized by the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

Hardy is one of the studio’s new favorite actors, coming off his notable appearances in The Dark Knight Rises and Inception (alongside DiCaprio). Hardy is starting to become active as a producer, having recently set up an untitled biker project at Warner Bros.
