Joan Rivers Hits Out At Oscar Winner Adele With Fat Jokes - Again

Letterman asked the American television personality what it was like attending Sunday’s Academy Awards, she described it as “a lot of new faces on a lot of old bodies”.

Rivers said she met the British songbird, for the first time, at the Oscars.

“What is her song? Rolling in the deep?” Joan asked. “She should add fried chicken!”

Joan then joked she overheard Adele moaning, “My throat, my throat, I don’t know if I can swallow! I said, ‘Oh, yeah — you can swallow!’”Joan hit back.

However it’s not the first time Rivers has teased the 'Set Fire to the Rain' singer about her weight. When Adele gave birth to her first baby last October, Joan tweeted, @Joan_Rivers: "Congratulations to Adele on the birth of her 68 pound 8 ounces bouncing baby boy." Ouch! 

After Adele's music success this season, the mum-of-one is said to be keen on having another child within two years with partner Simon Konecki according to The Daily Star.

A source revealed, "Adele has been telling her friends that she is ready to try for another baby. She loves being a mum and wants two kids to grow two years apart.

"Skyfall" could see a 45% jump after Adele's win; Bassey's signature version of "Goldfinger" eyes a 275% gain 

Music from Adele, Dame Shirley Bassey, Jennifer Hudson and more are all due to see huge sales increases on this week's Billboard charts thanks to Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony.

Sources suggest "Skyfall," which won Adele and Paul Epworth the Oscar for best original song, could see a 45% jump in digital download sales for the week ending Feb. 24. In the previous week, the single moved 36,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan. (We won't have the latest week's official SoundScan sales figures until Wednesday, Feb. 27.)

"Skyfall" is the first Academy Award winner to have also been a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 since 2003, when Eminem's No. 1 single "Lose Yourself" won. "Skyfall" is also the first song from a James Bond film to take home the Oscar.

Speaking of James Bond, it was a big night on the Awards for the silver screen's most famous secret agent. The Oscars celebrated Bond's 50th anniversary in motion pictures with a montage of moments and a performance of "Goldfinger" by Dame Shirley Bassey.

The Oscars... Adele couldn't have picked a grander scene for her first live performance of "Skyfall," the title track from the latest Bond film. About 30 minutes before winning best original song on Sunday, the British dynamo led a large scale run of the track.

With hair down and gold sequined black dress shimmering, Adele did her trademark stand-and-sway and this-big hand gestures as a full chorus and massive backing band (complete with a 15-plus orchestra) brought the layered, building track home.

After, she smiled and gazed at the upper tier of the Hollywood & Highland Center as Hollywood's a-list applauded (but no standing "o").

The performance could boost sales of the song, which peaked at No. 8 on the Hot 100 and has sold 1.6 million downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Earlier in the night, an ageless Shirley Bassey (76) sang another Bond title track that peaked at No. 8, the 1964 classic "Goldfinger," during a tribute to the 51-year-old film series.

Here's a bit of advice for all you awards show handicappers: Never, ever pick against Adele. If the British pop singer is up for an honor -- any honor -- chances are, she's taking home the trophy.

"Skyfall," Adele's aching, dramatic theme from the acclaimed James Bond movie of the same name, won the Oscar for Best Original Song. Oscar voters agreed with the judgment of the Golden Globes, where Adele also took the award for the best new song in a movie.



Adele faced stiffer competition at the Golden Globes. To win that honor, she had to beat Taylor Swift, Jon Bon Jovi, and other popular singers. Her Academy Award competition was, by contrast, middle-of-the-road and unexciting: "Before My Time" from the climate-change documentary "Chasing Ice," "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" from the crude "Ted," "Pi's Lullaby" from the surreal "Life of Pi," and "Suddenly," from the beloved musical "Les Miserables."

The Bond franchise is rightfully known for its excellent music, much of it composed by the conductor John Barry. Surprisingly. "Skyfall," which was written by Adele and her producer and collaborator Paul Epworth, is the first Bond song to ever take the Oscar in this category. None of the signature songs from the Sean Connery movies -- including the classics "Goldfinger" and "Diamonds Are Forever" -- were even nominated for the award. "Live and Let Die," Paul McCartney's wonderfully bombastic theme song from Roger Moore's first turn as Bond, earned a nomination in 1973, but lost the award to the treacly "The Way We Were."

In a similar contest, Carly Simon's "Nobody Does it Better," the hit from "The Spy Who Loved Me," lost to Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life." "For Your Eyes Only," Sheena Easton's atmospheric theme from the Bond film of the same name, was beaten by Christopher Cross' blithe "Arthur's Theme."

Adele scored at the 2013 Grammy Awards, too, and nobody seemed more surprised than she did. After dominating the 2012 Grammys, she probably felt it was time to give somebody else a chance. Instead, she took home another statue for Best Pop Solo Performance for her live version of "Set Fire to the Rain."

Still only 24 years old, Adele Adkins has emerged as one of the premiere pop singers of the last ten years. "21," her 2011 release, has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, and spun off three massive hits -- "Rain," the slow piano ballad "Someone Like You," and the smoldering "Rolling in the Deep."

1. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Slay Their Opening Monologue
Award show opening monologues can sometimes be an awkward drag, but comedy veterans Tina Fey and Amy Poehler knew just how to handle their Globes co-hosting gig. The ladies delivered hilarious joke after hilarious joke aimed at everyone from Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow ("When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron.") to Meryl Streep ("Meryl Streep has the flu, and I hear she's amazing in it.").They even poked fun at their TV star status, joking, "Only at the Golden Globes do the beautiful people of film rub shoulders with the rat-faced people of television."

2. Jennifer Lawrence Wins for Silver Linings Playbook
Jennifer Lawrence took home yet another award for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, and the 22-year-old star could barely contain her excitement. "What does it say? I beat Meryl [Streep]!" she joked when she first took the stage to accept her Globe. From there, Lawrence got more sentimental, thanking her parents for all their support over the years. She also teared up as she thanked her two brothers, saying, "I wouldn't be who I am today without you being mean to me."

3. A Homeland Sweep
Much like the Emmys, Homeland swept the 2013 Golden Globes. Damian Lewis took home the award for Best Actor in a Drama, thanking his deceased mother with a heartfelt tribute, "I want to dedicate this to my mom...who I know is up there bursting with pride and telling everyone up there how well her son is doing in acting." When Homeland won for Best Television Drama, executive producer Alex Gansa paid tribute to the show's leading lady, telling the crowd, "I wish you all could have seen Claire Danes, eight months pregnant, holding a steel pipe being chased by Abu Nazir." Just a few minutes later, the new mom took home her own Golden Globe and thanked her one-month-old baby Cyrus. "I have to thank my son... for joining me in this process and for being so game in fighting this war against terrorism," Danes joked.

4. Lincoln Gets a Big Name Introduction
Who else could introduce a film about an ex-President other than...an ex-President? Former POTUS Bill Clinton surprised almost everyone in attendance when he took the stage to introduce the movie Lincoln. Girls star Lena Dunham was beside herself with excitement, while Amy Poehler had a different take. The Parks and Recreation star channeled her inner Leslie Knope, marveling, "That was Hillary Clinton's husband!"

5. Adele Makes Her First Post-Pregnancy Appearance
Adele has won pretty much every award she's ever been nominated for, but the singer still seemed surprised and incredibly grateful when she took home the Golden Globe for Best Original Song for "Skyfall." "Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!" she exclaimed. "I was not expecting this, thank you so much!" According to Adele, she was just there to have a good time with a fellow new mom. "Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your world for one night," she gushed. "We've been pissing ourselves laughing over here." Taylor Swift's reaction to Adele's win was also priceless in a whole different way.

Adele's 'Someone Like You' is Most Performed Karaoke Song in 2012

Adele has been named the most performed artist at karaoke in 2012. 'Someone Like You' is the most popular song of the year, according to karaoke website Lucky Voice.

The service revealed that out of the 3.1 million songs available, the ballad accounted for 7.4% of all plays this year.

Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Call Me Maybe' came in second place with 5.4%, followed by One Direction's 'What Makes You Beautiful' in third.

Adele has three songs in the top ten, with 'Rolling in the Deep' at four, and her version of 'Make You Feel My Love' at six.

Queen, Bon Jovi and Journey also appear in the top ten as the only 'classic' tracks.

Gotye and Kimbra's big-seller 'Somebody That I Used To Know' finishes at number ten.

Adele was recently named the top Billboard artist for a second year running in the US, while her 21 LP was the top album.

The music of Adele has been voted as the most popular to fall asleep to.

In a survey of 2000 people undertaken by hotel chain Travelodge – via Capital FM – Adele was found to be the top artist to help people fall asleep at night.

She was followed by Coldplay, who previously topped the poll in 2008 and 2010.

Snow Patrol and One Direction also featured in the Travelodge Top Five.

Travelodge quoted Edinburgh Sleep Centre expert Stevie Williams while giving the results of the poll. Williams said: "Results from various sleep studies undertaken with a variety of male and female groups, has indicated that listening to soft, relaxing music at bedtime leads to a number of different benefits to a night's sleep."

Earlier this month, Adele said she would only lose weight if it affected her "health or sex life".

According to The Sun, she said: "I read a comment on YouTube that I thought would upset me – 'Test pilot for pies' – but I've always been fine with it. I would only lose weight if it affected my health or sex life, which it doesn't."

Adele gave birth to her first child last month. In a recent interview, a spokesperson from Adele's record company XL said they didn't expect the follow-up to her hugely successful second LP, '21', for quite some time. The comment came after the news that the British indie label made £41 million in profit in 2011.

Heat Magazine has published a list ranking the richest young Brits, and stars we cover here on Hypable top the list.

 

Harry Potter star Dan Radcliffe holds the top spot with over £50 million, while Twilight‘s Robert Pattinson comes in a distant second with nearly £39 million. Radcliffe’s co-stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have £26 and £23 million and are in fourth and sixth place, respectively.

Elsewhere on the list, the One Direction boys collectively have £26 million. The rest of the list is made up of female stars like Keira Knightley (£32 million) and Adele (£26 million).
