Large crowds gather to welcome Obama for public Inauguration 2013!

Washington (CNN) -- A day after formally beginning his second term, President Barack Obama on Monday takes part in the full trappings of his inauguration by reciting the oath of office in front of a crowd expected to number between 800,000 and 900,000 people.
The nation's first African-American president also will become only the 17th U.S. leader to deliver a second inaugural address before leading the traditional parade up Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House.
Amid the pomp and ceremony, with red, white and blue bunting festooned throughout central Washington, the event symbolizes American democracy with its peaceful extension of power based on last November's election that returned Obama to the White House.
And now Obama begins the second half of his presidency with the opportunity to make it more historic but facing some of the same challenges that he struggled with in the first half.
Satisfying the constitutional obligation to be sworn in on January 20, Obama and Vice President Joe Biden took quiet oaths the day before Monday's public ceremony at the Capitol.
The tone of the inaugural address will be "hopeful," Obama senior adviser David Plouffe told CNN, explaining that the president would "remind the country that our founding principles and values still can guide us in a changing and modern world."
Plouffe said that "the challenges and opportunities are enormous" in the president's second term, and that those challenges would be confronted as soon as the inaugural celebrations play out.
Reality of second-term presidencies
An estimated 1.8 million onlookers jammed the National Mall for Obama's first inauguration. The smaller crowd this time around reflects the reality of second-term presidencies, when the novelty and expectations of a new leader have been replaced with the familiarity and experiences of the first four years.
For Obama, that difference is even sharper. His historic ascendancy to the White House in 2008 came with soaring public hopes and expectations for a new kind of governance that would close the vast partisan gulf developed in recent decades.
However, a litany of challenges including an inherited economic recession and repeated battles with congressional Republicans over budgets and spending only hardened the opposing positions in Washington.
Obama's signature achievements, including major reforms of the health care industry and Wall Street, became symbols of political division, with opponents constantly accusing him of hindering needed economic recovery.
A second-term Obama has vowed to press for an overhaul of the nation's immigration policies and new ways to boost the sputtering economy, proposals that are bound to spark battles with his Republican rivals, and oversee the implementation of Obamacare.
And the shootings at a Connecticut elementary school last month put the divisive issue of gun control on his immediate agenda.
CNN polling released Sunday showed a majority of Americans -- 54% -- believe Obama will be an outstanding or above average president in his second term, while 43% said he'd be poor or below average.
And while overall, seven in 10 Americans hope the president's policies succeed, only four in 10 Republicans feel that way, with 52% hoping that Obama will fail.
Sunday swearing-in
Obama's swearing-in on Sunday took place in the ornate Blue Room, an oval-shaped reception space in the president's official residence, where he was joined by his wife, Michelle, and his two daughters.
Obama placed his left hand on a Bible held by Michelle Obama that was from her family. He then raised his right hand.
Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath, his third time to hold that honor. After Roberts flubbed the order of words during the public ceremony in 2009, a do-over took place in the White House Map Room the next day to erase any question that Obama was officially the president.
Roberts didn't have any trouble with the oath this time around. He read from a white note card. Slash marks where Roberts paused to have Obama repeat the words were clearly visible.
The event took less than a minute and Obama didn't make any formal remarks or statements.
He did take a moment to hug his wife and daughters, exclaiming: "I did it!"
Justice Sonia Sotomayor performed the honors for Biden at his home at the Naval Observatory in Washington, where the vice president's extended family and a few Cabinet officials gathered to watch the ceremony.
Both Obama and Biden went to Arlington National Cemetery after Biden's swearing-in for a traditional wreath laying.
The president and his family also attended services celebrating the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the most historic churches in Washington.
Sunday evening, the Obamas watched Latino acts at "In Performance at the Kennedy Center," which was followed by the "Let Freedom Ring" concert. The "Red, White and Blue Inaugural Ball" and "Hip-Hop Inaugural Ball" closed out Sunday's activities.
Obama also thanked donors at an event at the National Building Museum, telling them, "When we put our shoulder to the wheel of history, it moves forward."
But Obama also told them that his remarks were going to be short, given the speech he would be delivering on Monday, saying, "There are a limited amount of good lines, and I don't want to use them all up."
Inauguration activities kicked off on Saturday with the Obamas and Biden and his wife, Jill, leading volunteers across the country in National Day of Service Activities.
Later Saturday, singer Katy Perry headlined a concert for children of military families and Washington school children, hosted by Michelle Obama and Jill Biden. Singer Usher and the cast of the TV show "Glee" were among others who performed.

Papa John's, Applebee's And Others Pay Huge Price For Anti-Obamacare Politicking

It turns out that being a good corporate citizen is as important to selling pizzas as the thinness of the crust or the quality of the cheese.
If you don’t believe it, just ask Papa John CEO, John Schnatter.
As covered—and criticized—in this column in great detail, Mr. Schnatter decided to mix his politics with his pepperoni when suggesting that he would be cutting the work hours for Papa John employees in order to bring them below the 30 hour per week threshold that would require Schnatter to provide his employees with healthcare benefits.
It turns out, the pizza eating public did not approve.
Indeed, so serious was the reaction that Schnatter was forced to publish an op-ed piece where he sought to convince us that he never really intended to cut back worker hours but had simply been speculating on what he might do in response to the legislation.
According to YouGov BrandIndex, a leading marketing survey that measures brand perception in the marketplace (called “Buzz”), Papa John’s had good reason for concern as the pizza chain’s brand identity has plummeted from a high of 32 on election day, to a remarkably low score of 4 among adults who have eaten at causal dining restaurants during the past month.
Papa John is not alone in his anti-Obamacare misery.
Fast food server, Applebee’s, possessed a healthy Buzz score of 35 before Zane Terkel, CEO of one of the company’s largest franchisees, appeared on television to complain about the law and to announce that he would not be building more restaurants or hiring any more workers in response to his objections to Obamacare.
Applebee’s “pre-Terkel” Buzz score of 20 now sits at a pathetic 5.
I don’t imagine Mr. Terkel will be getting many Christmas cards this year from other Applebee’s franchise owners.
While these corporate complainers have sought to explain away the hit they are experiencing at the hands of the public’s perception, one such company is facing the music straight on. Darden Restaurants, Inc.— owner of Olive Garden, Red Lobster and LongHorn Steakhouse—has lowered its profit projections for the quarter ending November 25th, acknowledging that its bad numbers are the result of poorly performing promotions, Superstorm Sandy and…wait for it…the poor publicity it engendered by its decision to test out a plan to cut back on healthcare costs by putting more workers on part-time schedules.
Hopefully, other businesses seeking to avoid their responsibilities under the healthcare law—such as Walmart who intends to cut back employee hours in the effort to push workers onto Medicaid rolls rather than take responsibility for their employees’ health care—will get the message.

Donald Trump to Reveal Divorce Papers of President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama

Douglas Kass, an investor who appears on CNBC’s talkshow ‘Squawkbox’ where Donald Trump also appears, tweeted his 48,000 followers today: "High above the Alps my Gnome has heard that Donald Trump will announce that he has unearthed divorce papers between the Prez and his wife."
Trump will reportedly claim that the documents show the First Lady and the President were at one time seriously considering divorce, reports the Daily Mail. Claims about Obama divorce papers were previously made in ‘The Amateur,' a book released earlier this year by widely discredited author Ed Klein, who claimed that Mrs. Obama prepared the divorce papers to separate from the President in 2000 following his failed attempt to win a state House seat in Illinois.

A source close to the situation tells RadarOnline.com: "The Boston Globe is headed to court tomorrow morning for an emergency hearing in an attempt to obtain a court order to unseal the sworn testimony given by Mitt Romney in a prior court case and to lift a gag order so that the parties can speak about Romney. Gloria Allred will be in court representing one of the parties in the case."

Paul Ryan Pumps Iron in Time Mag Photo Shoot

The ogling of P90X workout fanatic-turned vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan reached a fever pitch as photos of the ultra-fit Republican hit the Internet today. The full spread will appear in the newest issue of Time Magazine.
Hours before the vice presidential debate — Ryan’s first appearance on the nationally televised debate stage — Time magazine released six photos of Ryan clad in gray work-out gear and a red baseball hat with headphone cords dangling down his back as he pumps 50-pound dumbbells.
The images were taken nearly a year ago when the Wisconsin congressman was a runner-up for the Time Person of the Year issue. At the time, the House budget chairman’s intense workout routine was little known outside the congressional gym.
But 10 months later, Ryan’s fit figure, coupled with his newfound national fame as Mitt Romney’s GOP running mate, has spawned Internet memes, Twitter accounts and a slew of online admirers.
Within hours after Time published the workout photos, two of which feature Ryan doing bicep curls, the Twitter account @PaulRyansBicep was born.
“Fact check this: I can bench press more than you,” another notes.
The”Hey Girl, It’s Paul Ryan” tumblr site nabbed one of the images for its latest online meme, adding these words over the image of Ryan curling a dumbbell, “Hey Girl, defending your wallet at the debate means TRAINING.”
A fake OkCupid dating profile was also created shortly after the workout photos were posted. In it Ryan’s body type is listed as “jacked” and his self-summary reads, “I’m lookin’ for a nice bunch of women to give up everything they stand for an vote for me. And those guns? Yeah — I built that ;)”
Ryan, 49, has not shied away from his now-infamous workout routine, despite the online attention. His father and grandfather died of heart disease, a genetic history he is combating by keeping his body fat below 8 percent.
Even the strenuous campaign trail can’t keep him away from his workouts.
“I’m going to keep myself in shape, that’s for sure,” Ryan told Yahoo News shortly after being selected as the vice presidential running mate.

Obama: Nicki Minaj Didn't Really Endorse Romney

“I’m not sure that’s actually what happened,” Obama told an Orlando hip-hop station this morning. “I think she had a song on there — a little rap that said that,” Obama said. “But she likes to play different characters, so I don’t know what’s going on there.”
The president was referencing the fact that Minaj is known for adopting off-beat alter-egos as part of her act.

Those already all aflutter on Twitter about Obama's choice of narrator were not disappointed when it came to the main event—Obama's impassioned speech, in which he officially accepted his party's nomination for president of the United States.
"North Carolina!!! C'mon and raise up. Take your shirt off, twist it 'round yo head. Spin it like a helicopter. Here We Go! BARACK OBAMA #DNC," raved Chris Rock as the speech got under way. He followed later with, "Mitt Romney is at home wondering how in the world he's going to debate Obama. No teleprompter there to save you Mitt. #Forward2012 #DNC."
"Dear future hubby you MUST look at me the way our president @BarackObama looks SO deep into his queen's @MichelleObama eyes. Yourz Truly!" tweeted a smitten Taraji P. Henson.

We are here to talk about a growing concern we all share. If we look to history, our great country and freedom are under attack. We're at a tipping point and, quite possibly, our country as we know it may be lost forever if we don't change the course in which our country is headed.
With our country at a crossroads, Chuck and I have asked ourselves what we can be doing to help support this great country we're blessed to live in and how we can encourage our like-minded American brothers and sisters to unite and let their voices be heard," she said. "It is estimated that in the 2008 election, 30 million evangelical Christians stayed home on voting day and Obama won the election by 10 million votes.
We know you love your family and your freedom as much as Gena and I do, and it is because of that we can no longer sit quietly or stand on the sidelines and watch our country go the way of socialism or something much worse.

Our great president, Ronald Reagan said, 'Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same.

We will preserve for our children this last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. We are here to talk about a growing concern we all share. If we look to history, our great country and freedom are under attack. We're at a tipping point and, quite possibly, our country as we know it may be lost forever if we don't change the course in which our country is headed.
With our country at a crossroads, Chuck and I have asked ourselves what we can be doing to help support this great country we're blessed to live in and how we can encourage our like-minded American brothers and sisters to unite and let their voices be heard," she said. Our great president, Ronald Reagan said, 'Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same.
President Reagan went on to say that 'You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. Clint Eastwood Speaks at the RNC

Clint Eastwood whipped up the crowd at the Republican National Convention ahead of GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's acceptance speech.
The iconic star of "Dirty Harry" and the Oscar-winning director of "Unforgiven" and "Million Dollar Baby," Eastwood criticized President Barack Obama for failing to turn the economy around and for wanting to close the Guantanamo Bay prison for terror suspects.
Eastwood says Obama has failed to deliver on his promises and it's time for Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, to take over.
He entertained the audience with a mock interview with Obama, posing questions and pretending that Obama had told Eastwood to shut up.
Eastwood endorsed Romney earlier this month at a campaign event in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Bill Nye Slams Creationism, Asks Parents to Abstain From Teaching it to Kids The man best known as "The Science Guy" has some tough words for those that deny evolution.

You know what gets Bill Nye's bowtie spinning? People who would refute the teachings of Charles Darwin.
The beloved scientist and television host posted a video on the website Big Think this weekend, making a case for evolution, which he called "the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology." Not believing in the idea holds everybody back, he said.
"It's very much analogous in trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates," Nye offered. "You're just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place."
Name-dropping his former mentor, astronomy all-star Carl Sagan, Nye made his case in a passionate yet restrained fashion.
"Once in a while I get people that claim they don't believe in evolution," he continued. "And my response generally is 'why not?' Your world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don't believe in evolution."
Finally, he made an appeal: "I say to grownups, if you want to live in your world without completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine. But don't make your kids do it. Because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and tax payers for the future."

Denial of evolution is unique to the United States. I mean, we're the world's most advanced technological—I mean, you could say Japan—but generally, the United States is where most of the innovations still happens. People still move to the United States. And that's largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science. When you have a portion of the population that doesn't believe in that, it holds everybody back, really.
Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. It's like, it's very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates. You're just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place.
As my old professor, Carl Sagan, said, "When you're in love you want to tell the world." So, once in a while I get people that really—or that claim—they don't believe in evolution. And my response generally is "Well, why not? Really, why not?" Your world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don't believe in evolution. I mean, here are these ancient dinosaur bones or fossils, here is radioactivity, here are distant stars that are just like our star but they're at a different point in their lifecycle. The idea of deep time, of this billions of years, explains so much of the world around us. If you try to ignore that, your world view just becomes crazy, just untenable, itself inconsistent.
And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future. We need people that can—we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.
It's just really hard a thing, it's really a hard thing. You know, in another couple of centuries that world view, I'm sure, will be, it just won't exist. There's no evidence for it.

Howard Stern calls Todd Akin a 'flaming a**hole'

Howard Stern ripped into Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin Tuesday, after the Akin stated his belief that rape victims don't get pregnant in cases of "legitimate rape".
Akin made the statements during a Sunday morning interview, claiming that he's "heard" that when a woman is a victim of a "legitimate rape," she secretes a hormone which prevents her from getting impregnated by her rapist.
“When I hear a f**king flaming asshole like that," said Stern. "I tend to blame every Republican. You just go: ‘I can’t vote for these guys with their stupid abortion agenda’. It reminds everybody how dumb that is!”
Many big name Republican leaders and pundits have called for Akin to drop out of his Senate race against incumbent Claire McCaskill. Tuesday, Howard Stern featured a clip of Akin desperately attempting to take back the statements during a Monday night interview with Sean Hannity, who told Akin the whole party was suffering due to his remarks.
“When Sean Hannity, who is a conservative’s conservative, turns on you. You know it’s time to get the f**k out of the race,” said Stern.
Akin was also scheduled to appear on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" following the interview, but he canceled at the last minute, leaving Morgan with an empty chair. Morgan called Akin a "gutless little twerp" for weaseling out of the interview.

Hollywood reacts to Paul Ryan VP pick
Hollywood to react to today's news of Mitt Romney's vice presidential pick, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan. Given Hollywood's liberal bend, it's not surprising that the reaction was largely negative (save for conservative news magnate Rupert Murdoch).
Here's a sampling of what the stars had to say via Twitter:
Eva Longoria: "Romney's VP pick voted against equal pay for women and repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. We can't go backward."
Olivia Wilde: "Two R's won't make it right. Romney/Ryan are Wrong for America."
Jared Leto: "Today Mitt Romney picked Paul Ryan, who wants to cut Pell Grant scholarships for nearly 10 million students!"
Michael Ian Black: "Romney/Ryan = same initials as Ronald Reagan. THINK ABOUT IT!!!"
Andy Richter: "I think saying "worst recovery in 70 years" is kinda cute. Doesn't at all beg the phrase "worst recession in 70 years."

Rupert Murdoch: "Thank God! Now we might have a real election on the great issues of the day. Paul Ryan almost perfect choice."
