Rolling Stone: The New Immortals -Taylor Swift,Beyonce,Rihanna,Lady Gaga

via glooce

Rolling-Stone-LOGO-2

Back in 2004, Rolling Stone assembled an expert panel of musicians, industry figures and critics to pick the 50 greatest artists of all time. We called these artists "The Immortals." A year later, our panelists expanded the roster to 100 all-time great artists, which you can read right here. But time stands still for no list, and when we look around us today we see a whole galaxy of other stars who belong in the Immortals conversation. Click through for 14 currently active (or relatively recently defunct) artists who we think will stand the test of time – the kind of acts whose names we wouldn't be surprised to see on a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballot at some point down the road when they become eligible.
Meet the New Immortals.

TAYLOR SWIFT
TaylorSwiftMC

If Taylor Swift stopped producing hits right now, at 23, she could tour a killer oldies show  for the rest of her life. Her catalog is already jam-packed with acoustic gems ("Fifteen," "Mean"), country-pop relationship anthems ("Sparks Fly," "The Story of Us") and stadium-size epics ("I Knew You Were Trouble," "State of Grace"). Swift grew up obsessed with the Dixie Chicks on a Christmas tree farm in rural Pennsylvania; she started writing songs at 14 before moving to Tennessee. It didn't take her long to conquer the Nashville machine – or to break out of it. She's sold more than 25 million albums, recently dominating the pop charts with her dubstep smackdown "I Knew You Were Trouble" and the bubblegum stomper "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." No matter what she does musically, Swift has chronicled growing up and navigating tricky relationships better than anyone else in the 2000s. "I know general things about love," she told Rolling Stone last year. "How to treat people well, what you deserve and when to walk away. Other than that, love is a complete mystery – and that's why I like to write about it."

KANYE WEST
kanye-west-11

Back in 2000, when Kanye West was an up-and-coming producer from Chicago with a name that people kept mispronouncing (if they knew it at all), virtually no one expected him to become a superstar. No one, that is, except Kanye West. He pursued his vision until it became a reality – placing several beats on Jay-Z's 2001 LP The Blueprint, then stepping into the spotlight with his brilliant debut, 2004's The College Dropout. He could have settled into a comfortable career from there, but Kanye has never been one to settle. His music got even more ambitious with each release, even as his lyrics got more searingly honest, peaking with 2010's complicated masterpiece, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Once he was an outsider; today, it's just about impossible to imagine our world without him.

LADY GAGA

Lady Gaga

In 2006, 20-year-old NYU dropout Stefani Angelina Germanotta changed her name to Lady Gaga and began her plot to take over the world. It only took about three years. In that time, she brought her Madonna-inspired dance songs from downtown Manhattan's cramped Bitter End to a multiple-night stand at Madison Square Garden. It was easy to dismiss her first big single, "Just Dance," as a pop trifle – but the hits kept coming at a dizzying pace ("Poker Face," "Paparazzi," "Bad Romance," "Edge of Glory"), each one more impressive than the last. Gaga also understands the 24/7 media culture better than any of her peers: she treats the whole world as a stage, posing in outrageously freaky costumes everywhere she goes, from the airport to the Grammys. By preaching the gospel of tolerance and self-respect to her army of "Little Monsters," she's split the difference between Oprah Winfrey and Madonna. It's a highly potent formula that's turned her into arguably the biggest star of the new millennium, with a staggering 34,500,000 Twitter followers. Her only challenge now is finding new ways to wow her audience.

BEYONCE
8a364fe6-4473-4b9d-adaa-27ac3162d641

Even if Beyonce Knowles had never done anything beyond the string of hits she recorded with Destiny's Child in the late 1990s and early 2000s, we'd still remember her as the leader of one of the greatest girl groups of all time – for "No, No, No," for "Bills, Bills, Bills," for "Say My Name" and "Independent Women" and of course for "Bootylicious." But that was just the beginning. As a solo artist, Beyoncé has soared to new heights of inspiration. Her many smash singles, from "Crazy in Love" to "Irreplaceable" to "Single Ladies," make up one of the past decade's strongest pop portfolios. More than that, though, Beyoncé herself has become an icon to countless fans – a high priestess of empowerment and unflappable attitude.

RIHANNA
006

Going by numbers alone, Rihanna is already written into the history books in bold ink. Her digital sales add up to 100 million – more than anyone, anywhere, ever. Her catalog of hits includes a dozen Number One smashes, from 2006's "SOS" to 2012's "Diamonds" – the same number as Madonna and the Supremes, and more than anyone else except the Beatles, Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson. But Rihanna's appeal transcends statistics. She's a star in the truest sense: a wild, larger-than-life personality you just can't look away from. Tabloid wildfires may rage all around her, but she shines bright through it all.

THE WHITE STRIPES

arts-white-stripes-reuters-584

"The joke was always, 'We'll take Detroit garage rock to the world," Jack White told Rolling Stone in 2002. Mission accomplished. The White Stripes' combination of raucous punk and Delta blues resonated with MTV and rock radio, and their 2003 single "Seven Nation Army" has become a worldwide soccer stadium anthem. Born on the Detroit club scene in 1997, the band hit big in the early 2000s with a fully realized aesthetic: childlike lyrics, a peppermint color scheme, an obsession with the number three and supposed family ties (White introducing drummer Meg onstage as his "big sister," when they were actually exes). But they truly thrived during their intense live gigs, where White tore up his cheapo Airline guitar and pogoed across the stage as Meg thrashed like a cavewoman. "There is something about the way I attack things and the way she attacks things," White told Rolling Stone in 2005. "When you put those dynamics together, something interesting happens." The Stripes officially called it quits in 2011 after a few years of inactivity, but White has blazed forward on his own – most recently with his excellent solo debut, 2012's Blunderbuss.

THE ROOTS
uestlove-of-the-roots-3.562.325
The Roots may not have technically been the first live band in hip-hop – shout-out to Stetsasonic – but hands down, they're the greatest. Drummer Ahmir Thompson (a.k.a. Questlove) and rapper Tariq Trotter (a.k.a. Black Thought) connected in the late 1980s, when they were classmates at a performing-arts high school in Philadelphia. From 1993 on, they recorded a string of acclaimed LPs with an expanded line-up that took the jazzy style of predecessors like A Tribe Called Quest in revolutionary new directions – stirring in funk, soul, psychedelia and art-rock influences as the years flew by. In 2009, after nearly 15 years of tireless touring, the Roots accepted a gig as the house band on Jimmy Fallon's new late-night show. This could have heralded a comfortable retirement – but instead they've somehow become even more prolific, releasing some of their most fearless music to date and jamming on national television with everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Prince.

THE STROKES
Julian-Live-the-strokes-22043121-640-426

The Strokes burst onto the scene in 2001 with an effortlessly distinct sound: Julian Casablancas' audible distant scowl, Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr.'s clashing double-guitar attack and an air-tight rhythm section. The band's first two albums, 2001's Is This It and 2003's Room on Fire, wrapped the youthful decadence and dive-bar realism of lower Manhattan life into contagious hooks recalling the Velvet Underground. The combination was monumental enough to open doors for a generation of rock & roll bands – including Kings of Leon, the Black Keys and many more. "Why does everything that has to be big and popular suck?" Julian Casablancas asked Rolling Stone in 2003. "We're trying to change that."

GREEN DAY
images

Green Day rose out of the San Francisco punk rock scene of the late 1980s, but from the very beginning they had global ambitions. Despite the inevitable cries of "sell-out," the three-piece band signed to a major label in 1994 and released Dookie. Within months, every high school kid in America was blasting "Longview," "Basket Case" and "Welcome to Paradise" in their bedrooms, and the band was stealing the show at Woodstock 1994. They continued to release hit records over the next decade (including the ballad "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," but in 2004, they wowed the critics with their anti-Bush rock operaAmerican Idiot. Just as they were about to be written off as has-beens, an entirely new generation of teenagers became obsessed with the group and the album became a landmark release. Nearly a decade later, they remain one of the biggest bands on the planet.

Lady Gaga Talks With PropaGaga: "ARTPOP is my first real album"

Last night, during the meet & greet at the Born This Way Ball in St.Paul Minnesota one of the admins of the famous Lady Gaga fan-page PropaGaga, met Gaga & had the chance to talk with her. During their meet, Gaga spilled some important info about ARTPOP. Read what she said below or clic here o read the full article on PropaGaga.com.

  • Gaga spoke about ARTPOP, saying that she was much happier while writing and recording it – a process that started directly after she finished with Born This Way
  • Gaga said that she knew Born This Way was a challenge to most of her fans, and that we endured a lot. She continued and said that she created the album, which ultimately became a movement, as a form of therapy, and she has no regrets about Born This Way, though feels she is now able to move on as a happier and more mature person.
  • When asked if she felt pressured about the new record, Gaga said she would be worried if there wasn’t any pressure, because it helps her work. She said she knows what we want, and that’s fun, dirty, dance music, and there’s no shortage of it on ARTPOP.
  • She explained that the album is pretty much done: there’s vocals and music on all the tracks, but she wants to take three weeks after the tour is over, during her break, to re-record her vocals with her coach Don Lawrence, so that the album is the best quality it can be, because its forever.
  • Gaga mentioned that she considers ARTPOP her first real album, that its about a phoenix rising from the ashes, and is worried if she’ll ever be able to top it because she knows it’s that good.

Lady Gaga's Machine Gun Bran sparkles controversy

via glooce

352325-gaga

No stranger to controversy,  Lady Gaga has caused outrage once again by brandishing a machine-gun bra just a month after twenty six
people were killed in a US school massacre.
The popstar donned the outfit consisting of two plastic assault rifles strapped to each cup, during her concert in Vancouver, Canada.
But critics have suggested the garb is insensitive and in poor taste after 20 children and six adults were killed in a horrific massacre at Connecticut's Sandy Hook primary school on December 14 last year.
A national debate on gun control is continuing to be played out in the US while the pop star flaunted the weapons during the North American leg of her Born This Way Ball tour.

Lady Gaga expresses thanks to Russian PM for support of gay rights

    via glooce

Lady Gaga arrived in, St. Petersburg, Russia, on Dec. 7 and just hours prior to touch down, expressed her gratitude to Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev for opposing laws that forbid minors from receiving information about homosexuality.

The Mother Monster took to Twitter and posted: “Thank You Prime Minister Medvedev for not standing by your party's anti gay propaganda law & instead supporting my show+fans all over Russia.” In a second post to Russia’s PM, Lady Gaga posted: “Prime Minister Medvedev please accept my gratitude I am looking forward to performing in RUSSIA & celebrating our cultures coming together.”

Nine regions, including St. Petersburg, have recently passed bills imposing fines of up to $150,000 for providing minors with information on homosexuality, as this information is deemed by law to be “homosexual propaganda.” In a Dec. 7 interview, PM Medvedev said, “Not all relations between people can be regulated by law,” speaking to the anti-gay laws that are currently in place. On Dec. 19 The Duma, which is Russia's parliament, will consider the nationwide ban of these educational materials.

The 26-year-old mega-star has been a longtime supporter of the LGBTQ communities and has never shied away from giving her support. Of course in typical Mother Monster style, upon landing in St. Petersburg she tweeted: “Just arrived in St. Petersburg Russia I'm so delighted to see so many monsters at the airport. Take me to the ballet!”

Lady Gaga wears bikini Top in Brazil as she waves to her fans from Hotel Balcony

    via glooce

On Thursday, Mother Monster was spotted poolside at her hotel in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But relaxing quickly turned into an impromptu wave session between Gaga and her adoring Little Monsters.

The 26-year-old superstar flaunted her curves in a light blue strapless bikini top, while a beach wrap served as bottoms.

“OI GALERA! In Rio + My beautiful fans are wearing leather & bandanas in the sun, bad asses, gorgeous smiles & fists in the air! I HEAR U!” Gaga wrote on Twitter.

“I’m sending you hamburgers, fries, and coke. I love you monsters,” she continued, later adding that there were “hundreds” of fans outside her hotel.

Madonna attacks again: "I have the best fans. So take that, Lady Gaga!!!"

    via glooce

During her latest concert in St. Paul, Madonna decided to restart her ongoing attack on all things Lady Gaga. It seems Madonna was offended because Lady Gaga rejected her invitation to perform together.

"I have the best fans in the whole world. So take THAT, Lady Gaga! You know, I invited her on stage to sing with me. But, she turned me down. It's okay. I've been rejected before, it builds a little character."

WILL LADY GAGA’S ‘ARTPOP’ HAVE A ‘TELEPHONE’ SEQUEL?

    via glooce

Will Lady Gaga and Beyonce be reteaming for her upcoming album ‘ARTPOP?’ Well, if one of Gaga’s deleted tweets is to be believed, the answer is quite possibly!

Curious about ‘ARTPOP,’ a fan asked Gaga via tweet if there would be a continuation of the hit song ‘Telephone’ on the new album. Her reply? “@drunky_gaga fact.”

Mother Monster has been quiet on Twitter and her Little Monsters site lately, so this digital transmission perked our ears up.

Based on what she wrote, there’s not much information or context clues to go on, since she replied to her fan with a single word. She called the continuation a fact, which is a truth. So we can only infer so much.

But the truth is… we just don’t know. Even so, the possibility of a second installment of ‘Telelphone’ thrills us.

It’s not clear if the “continuation” of ‘Telephone’ would feature Beyonce or if it would be a proper sequel, or if it would be Gaga solo, without an assist from Bey. Of course we’d hope that Bey would do a reprise, since it’s not really a continuation of ‘Telephone’ without Bey.

This tweet isn’t on her feed any longer, so we are left with more questions than answers.

Although this tidbit of information doesn’t really shed a whole lot of light, it’s worth noting that Gaga included a “To be continued…” message at the close of her ‘Telephone’ video. So, if this repeat collabo really does happen, it wouldn’t be too too surprising, since Gaga promised a continuation years ago!

Lady Gaga's Little Monsters 'Overjoyed' With Body Revolution

    via glooce

Following the media eruption over Lady Gaga's apparent weight gain, the pop star decided to turn the negative attention into something positive for not only her, but for her Little Monsters when she launched her Body Revolution 2013.

Gaga started the initiative by posting four revealing photos of herself, declaring her personal struggle with anorexia and bulimia and encouraging fans to embrace their society-deemed flaws and stand against discrimination. MTV News met up with some fans featured in the campaign to see how Gaga's message affected them.

"It's really important because there are a lot of impressionable kids that look up to her," Little Monster subscriber and Body Revolution supporter Amy Christoforou said. "And for somebody to make such a name for herself and be bullied when she was younger and stand up and be where she is right now it's awesome, it's absolutely awesome."

Since its launch, thousands of fans have flooded the website to share their stories and to spread Gaga's message to "inspire bravery. and BREED some m$therf---ing COMPASSION." One fan, Caroline Rothstein, who is a spoken word poet and has been an eating disorder recovery advocate for 12 years, posted a video titled "Fat" that was so moving even Lady Gaga tweeted it, calling her an "inspiring woman."

"After hearing about Lady Gaga announcing this Body Revolution and sharing her own eating disorder story I thought: 'You know, let me join with them.' So this is an incredible opportunity to connect with more people," Rothstein said about sharing her video, created less than a year ago. "I figured, a few fans would maybe see it and connect. I had no idea that the next day Lady Gaga would pick it from the thousands of posts and share it."

Another Little Monster, Emily Rose, whose picture was tweeted by Mother Monster, also suffered with bulimia and anorexia, and like Lady Gaga, she wanted to be able to share her story in order to help and inspire others.

"When I saw Gaga had launched this initiative, I was overjoyed. There are so many women today who are insecure about their appearance and they need someone as iconic and inspirational as Gaga to tell them that weight is not a number one priority in life," Rose said. "I decided to share my story on Body Revolution because I want to let other girls know that being thin doesn't make you happy.

"Ever since I developed anorexia and bulimia three years ago, I have been royally miserable for the duration of that time," she continued. "But ever since I realized that there are many other things in life besides being obsessed with weight, it has become easier for me to accept myself. I want other girls to be able to realize this too."

Fans have also become to recognize Body Revolution as a comfortable environment where they can express their insecurities knowing they will not be judged, but embraced.

"I just got a lot of comments saying don't worry everything's fine, you're beautiful, it doesn't matter what you look like. It was really great," said Christoforou, who, since the age of 13, has suffered from scoliosis and has had multiple back surgeries, leaving her with a large scar on her back. After the launch of Body Revolution, she posted the photos of her scar and several X-Ray shots for the first time.

Rose also felt the outpouring of support from her fellow Little Monsters, "I have never had so much support, encouragement and compassion from so many people. They have made me feel so valued and now I know my story is out there. I hope that I can inspire other Monsters with body insecurities to accept themselves as I have."

These fans also agree that the Body Revolution campaign couldn't come at a better time, since so many people are looking for an outlet to share their insecurities, but to also create positive connections with people that are in similar situations.

"I will be really honest. I joined Little Monsters on Tuesday night to post, so I really did not get how massive and incredible her fan base was until this week," Rothstein said. "So I think this just opens up more dialogue. The more conversation we can have with ourselves and with each other the closer we get to freeing ourselves from shame, and the shame is what causes addiction and self-harm and eating disorders and discrimination in the first place, so I think this does amazing things for her fans and I hope it can reach beyond that."

Lady Gaga's Family Restaurant Hit With a 'C' Health Grade

    via glooce

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Joanne Trattoria, the New York restaurant owned by Lady Gaga's parents that was recently Deathwatched by Eater NY, just got a C grade from the DOH. To get a C, a restaurant must receive more than 27 violation points during an inspection. Joanne received 42 points, which according to the New York Post included "unwashed food-prep surfaces, no hand-washing facilities close to the kitchen and food placed in areas ripe for contamination." The restaurant plans to dispute the findings in court. In hopefully unrelated news, Lady Gaga — who calls the food at Joanne "so freaking delicious" — threw up multiple times on stage during a concert in Barcelona last week. Gross.
