One Direction are to join characters from The Beano after being drawn for a cartoon strip to raise money for Comic Relief.

The boy band are to appear in monthly spin-off magazine BeanoMAX, which goes on sale on Wednesday.

Other big names making appearances in the comic are Jessie J, Olly Murs and former Doctor Who, David Tennant.

In the story, the stars help Beano characters Dennis The Menace [note to Americans: not that one] and Minnie The Minx put on a charity show.

One Direction said: "We've grown up with the magazine so now to actually appear in it with Dennis and Gnasher themselves is incredible."

Mike Stirling, editor-in-chief of The Beano and BeanoMax, said: "It was brilliant fun imagining how Jessie, Olly, David and 1D would interact with our mischievous characters.

"I hope they enjoy the results as much our readers and their fans will."

The Oscars... Adele couldn't have picked a grander scene for her first live performance of "Skyfall," the title track from the latest Bond film. About 30 minutes before winning best original song on Sunday, the British dynamo led a large scale run of the track.

With hair down and gold sequined black dress shimmering, Adele did her trademark stand-and-sway and this-big hand gestures as a full chorus and massive backing band (complete with a 15-plus orchestra) brought the layered, building track home.

After, she smiled and gazed at the upper tier of the Hollywood & Highland Center as Hollywood's a-list applauded (but no standing "o").

The performance could boost sales of the song, which peaked at No. 8 on the Hot 100 and has sold 1.6 million downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Earlier in the night, an ageless Shirley Bassey (76) sang another Bond title track that peaked at No. 8, the 1964 classic "Goldfinger," during a tribute to the 51-year-old film series.

Here's a bit of advice for all you awards show handicappers: Never, ever pick against Adele. If the British pop singer is up for an honor -- any honor -- chances are, she's taking home the trophy.

"Skyfall," Adele's aching, dramatic theme from the acclaimed James Bond movie of the same name, won the Oscar for Best Original Song. Oscar voters agreed with the judgment of the Golden Globes, where Adele also took the award for the best new song in a movie.



Adele faced stiffer competition at the Golden Globes. To win that honor, she had to beat Taylor Swift, Jon Bon Jovi, and other popular singers. Her Academy Award competition was, by contrast, middle-of-the-road and unexciting: "Before My Time" from the climate-change documentary "Chasing Ice," "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" from the crude "Ted," "Pi's Lullaby" from the surreal "Life of Pi," and "Suddenly," from the beloved musical "Les Miserables."

The Bond franchise is rightfully known for its excellent music, much of it composed by the conductor John Barry. Surprisingly. "Skyfall," which was written by Adele and her producer and collaborator Paul Epworth, is the first Bond song to ever take the Oscar in this category. None of the signature songs from the Sean Connery movies -- including the classics "Goldfinger" and "Diamonds Are Forever" -- were even nominated for the award. "Live and Let Die," Paul McCartney's wonderfully bombastic theme song from Roger Moore's first turn as Bond, earned a nomination in 1973, but lost the award to the treacly "The Way We Were."

In a similar contest, Carly Simon's "Nobody Does it Better," the hit from "The Spy Who Loved Me," lost to Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life." "For Your Eyes Only," Sheena Easton's atmospheric theme from the Bond film of the same name, was beaten by Christopher Cross' blithe "Arthur's Theme."

Adele scored at the 2013 Grammy Awards, too, and nobody seemed more surprised than she did. After dominating the 2012 Grammys, she probably felt it was time to give somebody else a chance. Instead, she took home another statue for Best Pop Solo Performance for her live version of "Set Fire to the Rain."

Still only 24 years old, Adele Adkins has emerged as one of the premiere pop singers of the last ten years. "21," her 2011 release, has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, and spun off three massive hits -- "Rain," the slow piano ballad "Someone Like You," and the smoldering "Rolling in the Deep."

One of the most anticipated births in recent history is expected in July, when the third in line to the British throne is due to arrive, St. James's Palace said this morning.

''Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July," the palace said in a statement. "The Duchess's condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month.'' 

Reading between the lines, the palace statement implies that the royal couple will have one child, dispelling speculation that the duchess is carrying twins.

Doing the math, if the new prince or princess arrives early, he or she could share a birthday with William's mother, Princess Diana, who was born July 1. But the due date looks likely to be mid-July.

Kate Middleton, 31, who is 13 to 14 weeks pregnant, is continuing to do better after spending four nights at a hospital last month because of severe morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum. 

The duchess has since cut her public engagements, keeping a low profile as she recovers. Her most recent appearance was for the unveiling of her official portrait Friday with royal watchers spotting a tiny baby bump.

Prince Charles recently delighted at the prospect of being a grandpa, saying, it's ''a very nice thought of grandfatherhood at my old age, if I may say so. So that's splendid. And I'm very glad my daughter-in-law is getting better, thank goodness.''

A royal spokesman says both will be out of the picture for the foreseeable future with William, 30, carrying on with his day job as a search-and-rescue pilot and Kate putting her feet up and out of the spotlight.

James Arthur: Most explosive X Factor opening sales, ever!

James Arthur has scored the most explosive start of any X Factor winner in history with his debut single Impossible, according to the Official Charts Company’s sales data released this morning.

Impossible, which went on sale on Sunday evening immediately after James Arthur was unveiled as the 2012 X Factor winner, had sold 187,000 copies by midnight last night according to Official Charts Company’s sales data.Arthur’s extraordinary performance already puts him on course for a storming full week, which will be bolstered further by the single’s CD release tomorrow (Wednesday, December 12).

No previous X Factor finalists’ debut single has hit such heights so quickly. In 2008, Alexandra Burke’s Hallelujah had sold 147,000 copies by the end of Monday, while Matt Cardle’s When We Collide in 2010 had sold 112,000 and Leona Lewis’ A Moment Like This in 2006 had sold 101,000 during their first two days on sale. Last year’s winners, Little Mix’s Cannonball had sold 69,000 at this stage of its opening week.

Comparisons with Shayne Ward’s all-time fastest selling X Factor winner’s single, 2005’s That’s My Goal, are difficult because it was issued in the early days of digital. The single had sold only 46,000 copies on download by Monday midnight, but exploded when the CD was released on Wednesday – it sold 289,000 copies on that day alone, on its way to a record X Factor opening week total of 742,000.

Official Charts Company Managing Director Martin Talbot says, “There has been a lot said about X Factor’s popularity this year and questions have been raised that perhaps its momentum is beginning to wane. But this amazing opening performance by James Arthur suggests that it remains the pre-eminent launch pad for new artists. Whether Arthur will match Shayne Ward’s 2005 total, only time will tell – but he has a fantastic chance.”

The other previous biggest opening week totals are Alexandra Burke’s Hallelujah (576,000), Leona Lewis’ A Moment Like This (571,000) and Joe McElderry’s The Climb (451,000).

Dan Stevens to leave Downton Abbey

Rumors of Matthew Crawley’s demise have not been greatly exaggerated.

Multiple sources confirm to TVLine that Dan Stevens is not expected to return for Downton Abbey‘s fourth season — at least not on a full-time basis.

As TVLine first reported back in March, Stevens — who is currently appearing on Broadway in a revival of The Heiress — was one of a handful of Downton regulars who opted not to re-up through Seasons 4 and 5. At the time, series creator Julian Fellowes downplayed the buzz, telling me, “A lot of stuff started up because he’s going to be on Broadway, but it’s a limited run. But everyone pounced on that.”

And that fact remains, Stevens could very well change his mind between now and February, which is when Abbey‘s fourth season is expected to begin shooting. (Season 3 finally bows stateside on Jan. 6). But as of now, it appears Lady Mary will soon be following sister Edith to Spinsters Anonymous — unless, of course, Fellowes opts to recast.

And while one insider insists that option is not off the table, Fellowes recently confessed to EW, “I can’t see us doing that.”

When we think of singer Olly Murs, one thing in particular jumps to mind. No, not his cheeky personality, great music, or hip-thrusting dancing skills. We're talking about his trouser bulge.

Yes, we are fully aware that we have filthy minds.

Now Olly has spoken out about his love of crotch-hugging trousers, and even gone as far as to estimate the actual length of his willy. Graphic.

"Maybe 13 cm?" He told heat magazine, when asked about his 'length'. "That's what I'd go with - it's definitely not 20cm. It would be too big. I think 13cm."

Olly also revealed that he isn't fussed about his bulge being a regular conversation topic, which is good - considering we talk about it a LOT.

"It doesn't bother me," he said. "I have never, honest to God, tried to emphasise it. It has always been other people."

He added: "I have never thought of myself as someone who has a big bulge. But this is probably the first time I will be arrogant by saying I have never had a complaint...it's not about the size; it's what you can do with it that counts.

"It's not about quantity, it's about quality. And I am all about quality."

Sheesh an actual IN-DEPTH conversation about willies and sex. It's all a bit too much for us at 11am in the morning.

So it's all official then - Olly Murs has a big shlong. Perhaps he and Harry Styles can form some sort of club.

Adele's music voted the most popular to fall asleep to

The music of Adele has been voted as the most popular to fall asleep to.

In a survey of 2000 people undertaken by hotel chain Travelodge – via Capital FM – Adele was found to be the top artist to help people fall asleep at night.

She was followed by Coldplay, who previously topped the poll in 2008 and 2010.

Snow Patrol and One Direction also featured in the Travelodge Top Five.

Travelodge quoted Edinburgh Sleep Centre expert Stevie Williams while giving the results of the poll. Williams said: "Results from various sleep studies undertaken with a variety of male and female groups, has indicated that listening to soft, relaxing music at bedtime leads to a number of different benefits to a night's sleep."

Earlier this month, Adele said she would only lose weight if it affected her "health or sex life".

According to The Sun, she said: "I read a comment on YouTube that I thought would upset me – 'Test pilot for pies' – but I've always been fine with it. I would only lose weight if it affected my health or sex life, which it doesn't."

Adele gave birth to her first child last month. In a recent interview, a spokesperson from Adele's record company XL said they didn't expect the follow-up to her hugely successful second LP, '21', for quite some time. The comment came after the news that the British indie label made £41 million in profit in 2011.
