DVR ratings: ‘Hart of Dixie,’ ‘Grimm’ season 2, ‘Nikita,’ ‘Nashville’ win

Before diving too deep into our analysis of the latest notable DVR ratings, a refresher: these are live+7 numbers that include a full week of time for viewers to watch their favorite shows, and they are not nearly as significant as live viewers when it comes to whether or not a show is renewed or canceled. Our personal litmus test is that any show that gains more than 45% of its 18-49 audience by DVR viewing is one worth looking at, since otherwise it is more or less a moot point.

This week (which we are actually looking at data for the week of October 15), a number of bubble shows in the first and second seasons benefited greatly from these figures … though all of them are probably still safe from being in danger later on. (All figures via TVbythenumbers.)

“Grimm” (up 87% to a 2.8 rating) – “Grimm” is a DVR beast like no other, and it has to be all but guaranteed at the moment that this show is really going nowhere. Next to “Shark Tank,” it’s the best thing Friday night has going for it.

“Nikita” (up 67% to a 0.5) – 67% of a low number is still a really low number, and that is what we are looking at here with this show. Since a third-season renewal adds to the likelihood of a fourth thanks to syndication, our guess here is that “Nikita” will probably receive more episodes, but have to finish its run in the summer months with a reduced budget.

“Nashville” (up 65% to a 3.3) – A 2.0 rating (which the drama had for this week) was not enough to guarantee safety, but good reviews coupled with strong DVR figures may be just enough to give Connie Britton and company at least a full season.

“Chicago Fire” (up 60% to a 2.4) – This decision will probably be made at the eleventh hour. The good news is that the numbers aren’t dropping for this show; the bad news is that it is the lowest-rated drama series the network has at the moment.

“Revolution” (up 57% to a 5.2) – There’s really no point here of including this show. “Revolution” has a full season, and if it returns to these numbers in the spring, season 2 is all but guaranteed.

“Elementary” (up 52% to a 3.5) – Sherlock Holmes has not delivered numbers that will stun anyone into silence, but this is the only new CBS show in the top 25 here … and it and “CSI” are the only CBS shows in the top 20, period.

“Hart of Dixie” (up 50% to a 0.9) – The “Hart of Dixie” ratings are not stellar, but it’s all about perspective. This far, season 2 has averaged better numbers than “Gossip Girl” (in its final season), “90210,” “Nikita,” and “Emily Owens, M.D.” This should get it a season 3 almost by default.

“Scandal” (up 47% to a 2.8) – Like “Nashville,” this well-reviewed show will remain on the bubble despite these strong ratings. Luckily, at least it already has a full season.

“Last Resort” (up 47% to a 2.5) – So why is “Scandal” on the bubble and “Last Resort” in danger despite the small ratings differential? It all comes down to timeslot, and the fact that ABC likes being in business with Shonda Rhimes.

Exclusive Grimm First Look: Will Monroe Go Undercover to Help Nick and Hank?

Grimm’s Monroe is usually a behind-the-scenes kind of guy — but he may soon take the lead and prove he’s blutbad to the bone. TVLine has your exclusive first look at this Friday’s episode, which marks the NBC drama’s official move back to its 9/8c timeslot. In the clip, Silas Weir Mitchell‘s Monroe helps Nick and Hank try to figure out why they found a blutbad in an unexpected place – and how Monroe’s status as one of the wolflike creatures (albeit a reformed one) might make him the best choice to get a closer look at the situation.

TV Line has confirmed a Grimm outlook for veteran actor Jason Gedrick.

Look for the star to appear on an upcoming episode of this NBC drama as Craig Wendell, a death row inmate put away by Hank who begins to convince Russell Hornsby's character that perhaps he really did commit his crime in self-defense against a tandem of "monsters."

Grimm Returns With A Growl For Season 2

NBC's Grimm began its first season showing a lot of potential, but it took a little time for the supernatural drama to find its rhythm. Fortunately, NBC gave it room to grow, and grow it did. By the end of the series' first season, just as Nick was beginning to settle into his new life balancing his work as a detective with his calling as a Grimm, so too did Grimm settle in as a series well worth watching each week. Season 2 premieres with "Bad Teeth," but other than its title, there's nothing bad about the series' second season premiere.

Created by Stephen Carpenter, David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, Grimm is a drama series inspired by the Grimm Brother's Fairy Tales. The series stars David Giuntoli as Nick Burkhardt, a homicide detective who discovers he's the descendent of a line of criminal profilers known as Grimms, and that his job is to help protect mankind against various beasts disguised as humans




The first season introduced us to Nick as he attempted to juggle his personal and professional life with his responsibilities as a Grimm. This included keeping his newfound nature and responsibilities from his fiancé Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch) and his partner Hank (Russell Hornsby). Given the violent nature of some of the creatures he's able to see, there's naturally a bit of crossover between his work with the police and what he does as a Grimm. Nick also developed an unconventional relationship with two reformed Grimm Creatures, Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee (Bree Turner).

When Season 1 wrapped up, Juliette was in a coma, having been scratched by Adalind's cat, and Nick's mother (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) arrived, though she was presumed to be dead up until that point.

Season 2 gets off to a great start, introducing Nick's mother Kelly to the story and adding some great tension, as she isn't exactly thrilled to find that her son's closest confidants are creatures she considers to be a threat. Kelly's a bit of a wildcard, especially since she's supposed to be dead, but Mastrantonio's great in the part and demonstrates her ability to get in on the action when push literally comes to shove for her character.



Speaking of family additions, Captain Renard's (Sasha Roiz) estranged brother comes back into his life. And with that is the appearance of the fantastic James Frain (The Cape, True Blood). Not only is Frain a great bit of guest-casting for the season, but perhaps we'll get get to know a little bit more about Renard's (royal) background now that his brother is in the picture.

Waking Juliette from her mysterious coma is obviously a priority, but "Bad Teeth" also brings a new threat to town, and as always Nick's attention has to be divided between work, personal and Grimm. He has responsibilities and enemies, but he also has Monroe, Rosalee, and now his mother, so he isn't completely on his own. And that's a good thing, as it seems someone (or something) has it out for him.

The development of the trio of Nick, Rosalee and Monroe is probably my favorite thing about the series, and with Kelly in the picture, Monroe and Rosalee's unusual relationship with Nick is brought into focus with some great moments. Grimm's first season took a little while to get going, but once it did, it became a must-watch series, and one of the best dramas on TV on Friday nights. The second season premiere picks up on some of the momentum left over from Season 1 and runs with it, delivering an exciting start to what will hopefully be another great season for the series.

Grimm Season 2 premieres Monday, August 13 at 10:00 p.m. ET on NBC.

(Starting September 21, the series will move to Fridays).
