Disney Now Says New Princess Sofia Is Not Latina After Controversy Erupts

via glooce

First came the revelation that Disney's newest princess in the upcoming Disney Channel and Disney Junior TV feature, Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess, is Latina.

That was then followed by frustration that the young lady didn't look Latina enough.

Now, it seems as if the situation might be a little more royally complicated, as the Mouse House is suggesting this princess isn't actually Latina at all.

"What's important to know is that Sofia is a fairy-tale girl who lives in a fairy-tale world," said Nancy Kanter, senior vice president of original programming and general manager of Disney Junior Worldwide, per NBC Latino. "All our characters come from fantasy lands that may reflect elements of various cultures and ethnicities but none are meant to specifically represent those real world cultures."

Craig Gerber, a coexecutive producer and writer on the feature, added that as far as Sofia's ethnicity is concerned, she is "a mixed-heritage princess in a fairy-tale world. Her mother is originally from an enchanted kingdom inspired by Spain (Galdiz) and her birth father hailed from an enchanted kingdom inspired by Scandinavia."

Such statements, though, come on the heels of the more straightforward quote that Entertainment Weekly recently attributed to Sofia the First executive producer Jamie Mitchell: "She is Latina."

Prior to these most recent statements downplaying her ethnicity, Alex Nogales, President and CEO for the National Hispanic Media Coalition, had expressed concern about how Disney was marketing the show.

"We consume a hell of a lot of television, and I don't understand the reluctance of the producers to not be upfront and say, 'This person is Latina,'" he told E! Online

Nina Dobrev at Disney World with her costars (September 1st)

Bonding with her castmates over the Labor Day weekend, Nina Dobrev joined Candice Accola and Kayla Ewell on a Saturday (September 1) trip to the Magic Kingdom park in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

The trio of "Vampire Diaries" darlings romped about the Sunshine State theme park while at one point stopping to pose with a Halloween-dressed Mickey Mouse in front of The Haunted Mansion.

With the Disney adventure coming ahead of the young actresses' hit CW series' fourth season premiere on October 11th, Nina excitedly tweeted her plans to gal pal Emma Watson prior to the Magic Kingdom visit, as she messaged, "@EmWatson cant wait to see you @ TIFF next wknd for the PERKS premiere! In the meantime,Im going to Harry Potter World, ill be thinkin of ya! Laser doesn't work for everyone, and hair plugs eventually fall out. Blurg!"

In the tweet, Dobrev mentions her upcoming movie "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," which is set for a September 20th theatrical release in the States.

The 23-year-old Bulgarian beauty plays a young woman named Candace in the Stephen Chbosky directed romantic drama, recently talking with Ocean Drive magazine about the role, saying, "I think every character I play will always have a piece of me, in some way. Maybe not if I'm in 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' - maybe then, not at all. But there was something about my personality and work ethic that related to Candace."

"She's a perfectionist, a go-getter, an overachiever. I've been able to relate to all those things, but I've never had the chance to play that kind of character before... I really do believe that some people, even the greatest actors, if you're not like the person you're playing in a way, you can't access that role. It has to kind of be in you," Nina added.
