'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' Box Office: Film Breaks $1 Billion

Good news for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." Peter Jackson's "Hobbit" just broke the $1 billion mark in global earnings at the box office.

Released on Dec. 14 stateside, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" has now earned $1,001,134,992 in ticket sales worldwide. The film has reached a domestic gross of $301.1 million since its release.

"We could not be more proud to have reached this amazing benchmark," Warner's president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said, THR reports. "Together with our partners at MGM and New Line, everyone at Warner Bros. congratulates Peter Jackson and his entire cast and crew on the extraordinary success of this film."

Starring Ian McKellen and Martin Freeman, among others, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is now the 15th movie to earn more than $1 billion. Other recent films that reached figures in the billions include 2012's "Skyfall" at $1.1 billion, 2011's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" at $1.3 billion, and 2012's "Marvel's The Avengers" at $1.5 billion.

"Avatar" holds the number one spot in worldwide ticket sales. The 2009 smash hit made $2.78 billion, including $760.5 million in domestic sales. The only other film that has grossed more than $2 billion is 1997's "Titanic," which made $2.18 billion.

'The Hobbit' expected to gross $1 billion worldwide by March

The Hobbit is on course to become the 15th movie to earn over $1 billion (£630 million) at the box office worldwide.

Since opening in December, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has already raked in a whopping $921 million (£581 million) at cinemas across the world. Peter Jackson's film is still on general release, and has yet to open in China, so Variety predicts that it will cross the $1 billion barrier by March.

Back in 1998, Titanic became the first film to make over $1 billion at the box office worldwide. Last year, three films joined the so-called "billion dollar club": The Avengers ($1.51 billion to date) , The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion) and Skyfall ($1.04 billion).

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first in Jackson's new trilogy of JRR Tolkien adaptations. The second instalment, subtitled The Desolation Of Smaug, opens in cinemas on December 13 this year, before the series concludes with There And Back Again on July 18 2014.

The kind folks over at WaterTower Music have given us the exclusive soundtrack album art and track listings for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The first of a trilogy of films from Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy), will be released in the U.S. on December 14, 2012. The soundtrack will be released on December 11th. The soundtrack will be available both digitally and as a 2 CD set.

Shore’s music for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy has been performed in concerts throughout the world. In 2003, Shore conducted the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in the world premiere of The Lord of the Rings Symphony in Wellington, New Zealand. Since then, the work has had over 140 performances by the world’s most prestigious orchestras, and has even been the subject of a book, Music of The Lord of the Rings Films. 

“I have looked forward to returning to the imaginative world of Middle-earth for quite a while,” says Shore. “I read all of the books by Tolkien, including The Hobbit, when I was in my twenties, and his deep love of nature and all things green resonates deeply with me.”

Collect your Hobbit stamps and coins

Award-winning actor Sir Ian McKellen has officially given his seal of approval to stamps and coins being produced in honour of the first Hobbit film.



New Zealand Post has collaborated with The Hobbit's makers to produce a range of official stamps and legal tender to commemorate the release of the first film in the trilogy The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.


Sir Ian McKellen - who reprises his role as Gandalf in the new film after having embodied the character in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - says the coins and stamps capture the essence of his iconic character.

"To put Gandalf on these splendiferous coins is a wizard idea," McKellen said from London.

He said he is also impressed by the specially designed stamps saying: "The pointy hat, the beard and the illuminated staff - the $1.90 NZ stamp is pure Gandalf."

The coins - which are legal tender - will go on sale from November 1, alongside a set of six stamps celebrating the film.

New Zealand Post has also developed a range of additional collectable options including a presentation pack (retailing for $29.90 but containing collectables to the value of $37.50), and an Ultimate Collection book of collectables which will retail at $385.

New Zealand Post's spokesman Simon Allison said the collector's items are appropriate mementos of the film, and fit in with the mythology of Middle-earth - New Zealand.

"We're the only country in the world with the rights to produce these highly collectable coins, featuring iconic characters from what is sure to become a classic series of films."

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due for release on December 14, with the second film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, releasing on December 13 next year. The last installment The Hobbit: There and Back Again is slated for July 18, 2014.
